Eric shakes his head. “You kissed her.” he says, somewhat amused.

“She kissed me!” Blake replies, defensively.

Eric grins, closing the stable door. “And, you kissed her back, right?” he says, knowingly.

“Yeah,” she sighs.

“I thought you weren’t going to do this anymore, Blake.”

“I tried but -”

“Tulsa. Did you forget what happened in Tulsa?”

Blake glares at her brother. Neither of them notice, Charlie, the youngest member of the Meester family, hiding in the hayloft and eavesdropping in on their conversation at the mention of his older sister’s name. Charlie has been looking at his mother’s pattern books and sketching dress designs of his own into a notebook. It was something he couldn’t do in his house for fear his father would find out and punish him.

“No, and I don’t need you to remind me.” Blake says, irritated.

“I think you do. When you told that girl the truth -”

“I was there, Eric.” she replies, dismissively.

Eric sighs. “I know you like her. I know you want to believe you can tell her the truth but you can’t, Blake. The moment you do that we are out a job. We really need the money and a place to stay right now.”

“I’m not going to tell her so back off.” Blake says, bluntly, before walking away.

(----)

After the embarrassment of kissing Blake in the hayloft, only for him to run away from her Leighton had decided to try and push all thoughts of Blake out of her mind. She’d called up, Sebastian Stan, a boy that had in love with her since they could walk. She made plans to catch a matinee with him, but of course not before she introduced him to Blake in the hopes of making the object of her affection jealous. She studies herself in front of the vanity mirror in her bedroom. She wanted to look her absolute best.

Charlie walks into Leighton’s bedroom with knocking, earning him a glare.

“Get out, Charlie.” Leighton says, irritated.

Charlie smirks. “Fine, guess you don’t want to know what I heard Blake and Eric talking about.” he says, backing out of Leighton’s bedroom.

“What? What did they say?” she asks, anxiously.

“I thought you wanted me to get out.” he says, coyly.

“Do you want me to tell dad about those pattern books?” she asks, smirking, quickly regaining the upper hand.

Charlie frowns. “They were talking about you.” he grumbles.

“What about me?” she asks.

“Blake likes you.”

Leighton begins to smile. “He does?” she asks, feeling her stomach tighten.

Charlie nods. “But Eric told him not to tell you the truth.”

“The truth about what, him liking me?” she asks, confused.

Charlie shrugs. “I don’t know, Eric wouldn’t say but Blake told a girl back in Tulsa the truth and I think something bad happened.”

“How do you know that?”

“It’s the way Eric said it I guess.”

“Did they say anything else?”

Charlie shakes his head. “No.”

Leighton turns and faces the vanity again. Dead set on finding out what Blake was hiding from her.
