Well I'm back. I've been meaning to write for ages, but sadly my Ebay obsession has taken over a bit in the last few months and I've neglected LJ.
Just wanted to give a shout out to the wonder that is Dogville, the new Lars Von Trier film. Saw it last week at Cambridge Arts Theatre and it totally blew me away. Being a big Kidman fan I knew I was in for a treat. Isn't it funny how the woman herself and her career are much more interesting since she ditched that pint sized poser Tom (please give me an Oscar to justify my existance) Cruise.
The film is very dark in both tone and subject. Where as his previous work (Dancer In The Dark, The Idiots) has shone from being scarily real in viewing, this film all takes part on a stage and John Hurts narration gives it a much more theatrical feel. It said to be anti-american. I couldn't see it myself, apart from maybe the end credits. But I can think of a lot more US films which are more anti-american than this one. Kidman and Bettany captivate the script wonderfully, but I guess the surprise treat was from Patricia Clarkson. She certainly proves to be an acting force to be reckoned with, especially in a dramatic scene with Kidman.
So maybe it's slightly uncomfortable viewing, but this film is a must for anyone in touch with love, life and humanity.
