well i was going for the approach that opera singers need to go through specific training to sing without a mic over an orchestra. and when i said that i was assuming that said musical theater singers did not have that training. of course people can sing both if they train for both. and i would sing musical theater if i didn't have a mic lol it just would be interesting to find out how the sound would work, assuming that the performance space wasn't specifically designed to have the acoustics for an unmicced vocal performance. my point is, the people i'm talking about haven't had ACTUAL opera training.

because then the sound technicians would have very little to do, and they are quite good at their jobs. and the microphones sound so much crisper. maybe im biased

the trend in musicals is constantly shifting towards pop rather than classical/legit (unfortunately). so they don't really train you with a lot of older shows in mind. the training is reflecting what's currently in style, so a lot more value is placed on people who sound really poppy and belty instead of a full legit sound. it kind of annoys me because i don't sing pop that well.

and yeah sound technicians need jobs too lol. i would hate to see a pop singer try to outsing an orchestra without a mic, most pop singers have around the same volume while singing as they do while speaking, sometimes even softer.
