Religion doesn't prevent tragedies from occurring. For the record, Tony Lanza lived with his religious family who presumably went to church every Sunday, even after Tony graduated from a religious middle school. Tony's religious parents divorced in 2009.
This tragedy has sparked quite a diversity of opinions, for example (from most reputable to least reputable):

Adam's aunt, Marsha Lanza of Crystal Lake, Ill., said that Nancy Lanza kept guns for own safety, and had something of a survivalist mentality; she was worried about protecting her home if the economy went south.
Money was not an issue for the family. Marsha said her ex-husband left Nancy "well-off . . . She didn't have to work."
However, a friend of Nancy Lanza, local landscaper Dan Holmes, said she evidently still suffered from a bad divorce and could be pretty vocal about her ex-husband ... years afterwards."

Peter and Nancy Lanza married in 1981 in New Hampshire. She sued her husband for divorce in 2008, citing irreconcilable differences.
In their 2009 settlement, Nancy and Peter Lanza agreed to joint custody of Adam, then 17, who would live with his mother but have regular visits from his father. It’s not clear how often Peter Lanza visited Adam but he left his ex-wife with sizable alimony payments and agreed to cover their children's medical insurance.
Court records that were available on Monday show that Nancy Lanza was due to receive $289,800 in alimony in 2012, or $24,150 each month. Peter Lanza, an executive at General Electric who was earning an annual salary of about $445,000 in 2009, also agreed to pay for both their sons’ college and graduate school educations and to buy a car for Adam.
They agreed to divide their assets evenly, including sharing their Boston Red Sox tickets. Peter Lanza left the large house on Yogananda Street in Newtown, Conn., to his ex-wife and moved into an apartment in Stamford.
Each separately completed six hours of parenting education, which is required under Connecticut state law in divorce cases for parents of children younger than 18. The classes are designed to train parents to help children cope with divorce.

Nancy Lanza filed for divorce in 2009 and the documents suggest little argument. The couple agreed to split up their jewelry, clothes and family photos. Adam would live with his mother, the couple agreed, and they agreed to talk about the important decisions.
If it turned out they couldn’t agree on something related to Adam’s upbringing, Nancy Lanza “shall make the final decision,” according to the Sept. 24, 2009, settlement approved by Judge Stanley Novak.
There is nothing in the file that discusses the relationship’s underlying problems. The file simply says the marriage “has broken down irretrievably and there is no possibility of getting back together.”
Nancy Lanza, received $289,800 in alimony this year. It was to continue until December 2023, with slight increases each year for cost of living.

Frankly, Dobson's survivalist mentality (that the public sector can't do anything right) is the same mentality that leads people like Nancy Lanza to keep guns at home and practice using them at shooting ranges because they distrust society.
In my opinion all the evidence in the articles above suggests that Nancy was an unemployed person who distrusted society and complained about her generous ex-husband, and she either kept assault weapons at home or was unaware that her own son obtained them. Her divorce was amicable, even going into such detail as to split pairs of Red Sox tickets. She passed 6 hours of parenting training.
Perhaps the court made an error in judgment (maybe more parental training or supervision could have prevented this, and/or maybe this arrangement didn't account for Tony's autistic needs).
