Wow. I just played through Rutter's For the Beauty of the Earth and for the first time ever played the last page correctly and in tempo! I am stunned; I didn't believe I could do it, and yet I've done it.
Oh... I forgot to keep y'all updated on my organ practice. I'm still working on Alleluia, Sing to Jesus as my first organ piece ever. Today I tried combining practice of the foot pedals (bass), left hand (tenor), and right hand (soprano, alto) and I'm really happy; I was able to play SATB correctly for the first 16 (of 32) measures although not in tempo. I should start recording my practice sessions since I'm not doing a good job at describing why it's so challenging.
Perhaps the hardest part of playing the organ is trying to think while this very noisy instrument blares right in front of me! Sure, I'm coupling everything to keyboard II and playing only the 4' behind a closed swell, but it's LOUD! (If you have any questions about what that all means I'll probably provide you a link to Wikipedia or something.) Anyway, next time I'll try to put the final 16 measures together... and keep practicing both halves until I can play them both at constant tempi. Dum spiro, spero! :-)
