Beginning Lord of the Rings...

Jun 11, 2012 10:46

So, I am beginning the audio version of Fellowship of the Ring. (Note: I have opted to skip The Hobbit right now, given that I have tried my hand at that, a number of times, and rarely gotten out of the first two or three chapters. So, instead, I'm jumping right into the tale.)

At the outset, a few things to note, for myself and those who are interested in following my path of reading:

1) I don't remember the movies very well. I may have a rewatch marathon sometime, when we have the chance. I do recall enjoying them, though.

2) I can't guarantee that I've ever actually started Fellowship. Hence, why I'm giving it a shot now.

3) The forward to this edition of FotR is interesting, as it traces some of the printing history of LotR, and it's amazing how many errors were in each subsequent rendering. In some ways, that's fascinating to me, especially listening to the Introduction by Tolkien that this was an exploration in language, as well as trying to tell a story that will entertain. [Definitely reminiscent of The Dark Tower, at least in the latter sense.]

Giving it a go. :)
