I totally agree about the bad science. The water pipes bugged me, the cracking bridge bugged me (they haven't decompressed by now WHY?), the ability to fly after jettisoning the cores bugged me... many, many things.
But actually, it was the alt-timeline that bugged me the most. I don't think it would have been ALL that hard to approximate the BIG continuity things that basic fans know. Every time something came up that even I could spot-- like, oh, Amanda Grayson dying??-- I told myself, Okay, they're going to erase this timeline when they put it right, just like ST has always done. I even thought Spock was setting up for a suicide run for that exact reason. But when the movie was over and both timelines continued, it bugged the HELL out of me. Because to me, that's only there for one possible reason: so that Abrams can run an entirely new franchise of movies if they're popular, and he doesn't have to care that it's already been done. Which sort of pisses on the original crew, IMHO.
As I understand it, Roddenberry at least TRIED to keep good continuity. D'you think he's spinning in his grave right now?
