Water dripped from the two agents’ hair and clothing; their shoes squelched on expensive carpet. Halting in the penthouse doorway, Napoleon glared at Illya, who cradled a muddy feline in his arms.
“You can’t persuade me to keep that demon here,” Napoleon huffed. “It sank its fangs into my thumb.” Blood still glistened on the injured digit.
“Only because she wasn’t expecting such a … dynamic rescue.” Illya’s eyes widened guilelessly. “It would be unkind, even oafish, to cast her back out into the rainstorm.”
Napoleon groaned, but how could he renounce his responsibility for an innocent, no matter how unappreciative?
