I came across this quotation today. I'd heard it before, years ago. I thought it was stupid then, and I think it's stupid now:
Work like you don't need money, Love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one's watching
First thing I don't like is how "like" is used as a conjunction instead of a preposition, but that's the way English is moving these days and I can't stop that.
So why would I dance if no one were looking? I never dance for the sheer fun of it. I only do it because if know someone might be watching. My dancing when no one is looking is just me sitting down with my hand down my pants, since I'm not then worried about attracting a mate. Now, sitting around with my hand down my pants is not dancing. Not at all.
Work as if I didn't need money. That's just crazy! This advice must come from someone who doesn't need money. What kind of work is this, anyway? Working as if you didn't need money, isn't that the same as working as if you didn't need the job? Does that mean slacking off, not caring if you get fired? Madness, unless you really don't need the money.
Love as if you'd never been hurt. Yeah, whatever. That kind of love is careless and hasn't learned from its past. Always know you might get hurt, and that'll make the love you do have even more precious.
I hate love. I love love. Odi et amo.
stupidity,
bad advice,
love
