Fort Armistead, a very cold weekend mini-adventure

Nov 24, 2013 18:23

Fort Armistead is one of many coastal fortifications built to protect the United States’ major seaport cities before air warfare made them obsolete. Named for Major George Armistead, commander of Fort McHenry during the British bombardment in 1812, the Endicott Period fort sits on Hawkins Point by the entrance to Baltimore’s harbor and was active from 1899 to 1923. It was also used as a Navy ammunition dump during WW2. The grounds are open to the public as a park, and while the fishing pier on Hawkins Point is picturesque, the rest is classic graffiti-covered abandonment.
