Lady from same village: Oh are these your kids??? They're all grown up! They must have graduated!! You must be so proud! What kinda work are they doing now?
Mother: Oh she's still in school.
Lady: Oh.  Well my child is in her third year of college now and she has a job. *glances over at

UGH, those are the worst. MAN, scholarship dinners, with a lot of Asians..or Chinese at that, or even old generation Chinese..

I've been to dinners with like later generation Chinese too, they can be just as bad, but their petty condescending is a little less direct.

Oh well! Screw them!

I understand their thinking though. And I even understand their behavior. If I was in their shoes, I'd probably be giving the person in my shoes the same kinda look. They probably didn't even mean anything nasty by talking about it, but I just felt like crap because it reminded me of my own faults. It's like it doesn't matter how hard I'm trying now, I'm still a failure. I also realize that thinking like this isn't going to get me anywhere so might as well stick out whatever the hell I'm doing xDDD

Oh yes, definitely. It's a double punch, one punch of WHY YOU SAY THAT HOW DARE YOU YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ME, and another punch of I WILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH, I AM INADEQUATE, I AM NOT WORTH BRAGGING OVER.

Replying a bit late, sorry XD I tend to lurk on LJ nowadays :P

But yeah, I feel like at any large gathering of Asians, the conversation inevitably goes to: Children, and then it becomes a competition of whose kids are besting whose...

Comparisons will be the death of us all 8D!
