what do i say to you?

Jan 26, 2007 22:33

did you ever have one of those times when all you wanted to do was just curl up and cry?
a tiny pup moment.

the calendar caught on a snag.

hungry-empty nostalgia,
it's revelation and denial,
it's longing and regret,
hand-made valentines, worn dance shoes,
lemon pacifiers and minted cod liver oil.
every childhood dream that was lost in the dust,
in the cupboards of old art projects and your own secret journal,
in the depths of your unseen world you never dared to breathe life into,
to own.
you cast it off like a given-up child.
she's there now.
[she's here]
she's on your front porch.
[you see her through the cut glass]
she lifts her dusty hand to touch the bell and half-smiles and half-cries and asks,

are you my mother?
