Celebrating Friday with some spoilers and a lot of shallowness

So, yes, like the lemming I am, I have set up LJ Talk and will probably be off and on depending on my workload/whether or not I remember to set myself away when I am in meetings. I am extremely shy about IMing people out of the blue, though. Sometimes I frustrate myself. Well, most of the time ( Read more... )

I watched 2 or 3 episodes of Life on Mars. I was taken with it at first but my enthusiasm waned. There was what I considered a very contrived plot point in one epi. But then I realized if it's all happening to him in a coma, well, it doesn't even have to have much internal logic. And I'm not sure how I feel about that.

And I was undecided about the treatment of women. It's sort of sledge hammer misogynistic, but, again, if it's all in his head...

I think I'll just try to enjoy the rest of it on tv because I really liked the actors.

I found the misogynistic atmosphere in the 1973 police station alarming, but I suspect it's also quite realistic, especially since the show is set in an industrial city like Manchester rather than London. One of the things that made me really like Sam is that it seems like he found it alarming too, and it's another huge difference from what he's used to; I think a lot of what draws Annie to Sam initially is that he treats her like a human being. I'll be interested to see how the issue is handled going forward, and also how the time-jump gimmick is handled.

I think I've discovered that my SG-1 enthusiasm is high through the opening credits (the theme song does kick all sorts of ass) and then tapers off only peeking again when Claudia and Ben appear on screen. Preferably, together.

Oh, and Sheppard and Cam together? All sorts of hot. :)

I've seen some of those promo shots. I'm still having issues with the pigtails. Claudia is gorgeous no matter what they do to her hair, but it just seems an odd style for anyone over thirty, imho.

Re: DLM, I really enjoyed Mason when we first were introduced to him. The accent helped. But his laziness and sometimes stupidy (he drilled a hole in his head???) kills the attractiveness.

cofax7 just wrote a story about the two of them and the end of the world that I haven't had a chance to read but will rec sight unseen because she's an exceptional writer.

Yeah, it's a little odd. I suspect it's the show's way of signalling that she's Not Military, and Not Aeryn. I'm hoping that once they feel they've established the character better, they do something different with it, but I fear they think of the pigtails as a trademark.

DLM, I really enjoyed Mason when we first were introduced to him. The accent helped. But his laziness and sometimes stupidy (he drilled a hole in his head???) kills the attractiveness.

It's a dilemma. On the other hand, largely because of the accent, I thought Badger was kind of hot. Badger.

As I'm pretty sure I said to you before, I thought DLM just built steadily through the season, laying in the groundwork early and then stepping out into some truly moving and unique plot points. One of my favorite parts of the show is what they do with George's family in the aftermath of her death.

LoM, well, you know I like that one. ;)

You did warn me that DLM is a progression, and I really like the groundwork they're laying. One thing that has really impressed me is the way they've handled George's mother, showing why the two of them did not get along at all, the very realistic personality clashes they had, and how much both of them mourn the missed opportunities now.

For all of Mason's bad qualities of which there are many, he has some really lovely ones too. He's got a giant heart underneath that selfish snarkdom. I just love them all.

I really enjoy the scenes at the Waffle Haus. There's a great family dynamic between them; they may not even like each other much at a given moment, but they're all in this together.

One thing I'd forgotten about DLM is how much I love the opening credits. The music is interesting but not cliched (it's by Stewart Copeland, so I'm not surprised, as I think he's a very talented composer), and the all the black hooded reaper sequences are quite fun.

Do you recognize the Waffel Haus at all? :D It was filmed in Vancouver. heh.

I have only watched the first 4 eps of LoM so far, but I like it so much I went and got the UK DVD set. Not only do I like the mystery of the storyline, and the contrast between police work present day and in '73 (I watch a *lot* of Law&Order *g*), but visually I find it gorgeous.

Sadly, I did not recognize the Waffel Haus, but I suspected that was Vancouver.

I think Life on Mars is the anti-CSI in some ways--when you take away all the high-tech tools and gadgets, all Sam has to fall back on is straight police work. It will be interesting to see him deal with that. And you're right--it's a beautifully filmed show.
