I have to RSVP to the company holiday party. (Yes, they are having their holiday party in January for reasons beyond my ken.) I suspect I should go to this thing, because I never go to the weekly beer bashes or laser tag and bowling outings, and because it's expected.
BUT
I have this thing where when I'm at work, I want to be working, and when I'm not at work, I want to be actually doing things I want to do with people I know for reasons other than that we happen to share an employer. (I actually like a lot of the people I work with quite a bit, but we don't socialize outside of work.) I work a considerable distance from my home, and the party venue is even farther and not conducive at all to train travel, so I would have to drive. And I wouldn't even be able to view the event through alcohol-colored glasses because of the 50-mile drive home afterwards.
AND
It's on an upcoming Friday night. It may make me an enormous loser, but the next ten Friday nights are something of a sacred space for me.
I have no idea what I'm going to do.
In other news, I bring you five unpopular opinions about music:
1. Decent electronica was last sighted on Bay Area radio sometime around 1994. Yes, Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers came after that.
2. Mash-ups are annoying.
3. Coldplay is not all that. They're okay, but they wear their musical influences on their sleeves and haven't carved out any unique space in the musical landscape beyond number of albums sold. And a lot of the lyrics of their love songs display a kind of creepy, patronizing attitude toward the love object that makes me a little afraid for Gwyneth Paltrow.
4. Let us not speak of the Dave Matthews Band.
5. The last good U2 album was The Unforgettable Fire. It has been more or less downhill since then.
rants,
work
