I didn't realize you were such a soccer fan! My dad is a huge fan, and increasingly so in recent years, both as the quality of the MLS (though he also follows the Premiere League faithfully) and the US national team improves, and as cycling, his first love, seems to devolve further and further into the soap opera of doping scandals

I come from a family with a very, very strong soccer tradition, which is pretty amazing considering that said family is in Alabama. I played defense for about 6 years when I was a kid; my brother played soccer through college, and was good enough that he played in tournaments in Asia and Europe. At the time, there were no good career paths to professional soccer. But the whole family is still intensely interested in the sport. I can actually trace the availability of World Cup games on US cable from personal experience, because my family always watched what they could find.
Which meant I was really torn in today's game, and all told it turned out pretty perfectly for me, because I never did decide for whom I was rooting!I so envy you that experience! This year, for the first time, several major US cities are showing games on the big screen in public squares, and bars with satellite feeds are opening up at ridiculously early hours. (This is not such an issue in SF, since it's only illegal to sell alcohol in CA from 2-6am
