"Babylon Squared"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *flappy hands* I had been going merrily along, rationalizing the fact that it was getting a little better, sort of, and then there was that episode. And finally I realized that everything gabolange had been telling me about how this show was going to get exceptionally cool was probably in fact true.
And that's all I'm going to say about that right now. *sits on hands*
As for XF, I recently picked up seasons 1 and 2 on a big sale at HMV, and I've been thoroughly enjoying my season 1 re-watch. I've made a rule for myself that I'm only allowed to watch XF while on the elliptical machine, which has proven mutually motivating for both watching and exercising (although now that the weather's getting better, I'm sure much of my exercising will now take place outside, slowing the XF rewatch).
XF was my first Show. I watched off and on, as much as I could as a high school student sharing a family TV with four other people who didn't like the show, in the early seasons, and then got really hooked round about season 4 or so. Up through season 7, there really is a lot of good. The mytharc may never actually make sense (which I think I mind more now, in light of things like Farscape and B5 and hopefully BSG, than I did then), but the monsters are scary, and there's really no 'ship like the original 'ship! And while I had my share of lots of bitterness like everyone else, I actually enjoyed parts of seasons 8 and 9. There are other parts that have ruined entire plot archetypes for me always and forever, but parts weren't so bad.
So yes, I'd recommend it, fairly unreservedly for the first few seasons, with increasing reservation through season 7, and after that, yeah, probably you don't need to bother. Some of my recommendation may be nostalgia-influenced, but I'm nearly through the season 1 rewatch and am finding that it, at least, holds up very well.

I even genuinely liked and was interested in Sinclair! It was DISTURBING. But it did seem like that episode that some shows seem to have, in their Season 1s, that define what the show is really going to be.
I do enjoy a good monster of the week, and it seems like if I watched The X-Files mostly on that level, it could be a lot of fun.
