Great post :)

Yay for tenants, and I would love to find a landlord like you, because I would love to have a dog (my cats mightn't be happy with it, but I would love a pup).

I adore 'School Hard' too - Spike was mesmerizing from second one. I get giddy whenever its on tv (the same with 'Lovers Walk'; and i own the dvds!).

Also with you re: BAPS. I went no mail from them a while back and am relieved for the break.

Interesting insight re: Buffy regarding S6 and WSWB. I, too, still had some sympathy for her during her S2 return, and absolutely zero during S6. It always struck me that Buffy was only happy if she was able to complain about her Slayerly duties. It was all a big burden, until Kendra showed up, and then she was very proprietary. Same with Faith - resented the hell out of Faith and made it extremely difficult for Faith to feel accepted, which, IMH, was the key motivator for Faith going bad. Then in S4, being the Slayer was cool, b/c it impressed Man Meat Riley.

I have no doubt that Joss was oblivious to the deconstruction of Buffy in S6 (and to this day, hearing any of the writers defend it is pathetic beyond belief) since he was immersed in FireFlop. Both Buffy and Xander were completely made unredeemable - at least in my eyes - and there was very little effort to even try in S7. At least Willow had her moments of reconciliation with her evilness whilst in England, and a few close encounters with the darkness in S7. But the others... was really hoping Xander would die.

Truly. From what I understand, JM's a little embarrassed by the "theatricality" of his performance in "School Hard," and although I can sort of see what he's talking about, I think it actually adds to the sort of "now this is a vampire to be reckoned with" impact of the first impression we get of him.

I never fully lost sympathy with Buffy, but I can certainly understand why some people did. I think what remained of my sympathy for her through the end of S7 has more to do with the theory of Buffy than with a lot of what I saw in the actual episodes, if that makes sense.

I read recently that Joss made a remark about what he learned doing Buffy to the effect of "don't tear down your main character." To me, that's a good indication that the folks at ME really had blinders on through Seasons 6 and 7 and had no idea how bad she looked. It's kind of mind-boggling. The treatment of Xander, Buffy, and Willow in both seasons comes off like ME thinks that because they're Scoobies, the audience will naturally assume only the best about them--whereas the behavior they presented was often pretty repulsive. And I agree that in S7, probably because of this same blind spot, ME didn't make any real effort to rehabilitate any of the three; after all, they're Scoobies, and we're supposed to love them no matter how badly they behave and how little is done to make up for that bad behavior.
