Commercial, anyone?

Four years of tuition tuition: $20,000
Time spent commuting each day: 3 hours
Total spent on lunches: $1,200
Hours spent in classes and on projects: Let's not go there

Abandoning Journalism and becoming a carpenter: Priceless

Cheers to following your heart, Blake :)
At the very least, a Journalism degree is solid to fall back on. Everyone likes someone who can write (and writ concisely), so at least you'll have a way to pay for carpentry school!

Pay for carpentry school? >grins<

Nope! Pre-apprenticeship training: Free.

Basic/Intermediate/Advanced School: $400 each term (And you can collect EI while you're in class)

Apprenticeship: Starting wage $15.75 an hour
$19.12 after 1800 hours
$22.43 after that
$27.28 after that
and $32.16 as Journeyman.

$2,000 in Apprenticeship Grants from the government to cover school and tools ('cause getting EI isn't enough)

Tools as a tax deduction

10% vacation pay, benefits, free upgrade courses from the union.

$20,000+ in expenses from 4 years of university compared to earning over $165,000 in under three and a half years (if you don't take any time off)

Let's just say I'm not too worried about affording it.

Went in to the Formwork/Foundation Pre-apprenticeship orientation at the local union yesterday. Filled out a whole bunch of forms, did a math test (GASP!!! Well... simple math test, nothing beyond grade 9. Most of it was stuff from grade 7 or before. Can't believe I'm saying this, but the math was a cake walk) gave them $90 to make the apprenticeship formal with the government and cover first month union dues and some other costs ( ... )
