Summer and beyond
I used to be addicted to LJ and posted nearly everyday. Now I can't really think of anything to write. I must of been much more exciting back then =P.
I quit my job! Yayyyy.... my official last day is this Friday, but i'm using up my annual leave, so last Thursday was my last day in the office. My health insurance covers me through the end of July. And I believe my USF student health insurance should kick-in around mid to late august, so i'll only go uninsured for a couple of weeks. Still, i'm reminded at how much i hate our health system.... i hate going uninsured even for a short time, you just never know what could happen. Anyhow, here are my summer plans:
I'll by in Michigan next week (June 7 - 14). I'll be helping Kat out on her research (on the urbanization of Dengue virus in Ecuador), and get to see Ben and Kat at the same time. (sweet!) Then I'll be home in Florida for a couple of weeks, until the weekend of June 28, 29. My brother will be in town from June 23rd till mid July, so I'll be able to spend a week with him, before I head out to BLACKSBURG.
Yes, I will be in Blacksburg during the summer! I accepted the summer research position at VT, studying transgenic mosquitoes (Aedes Egypti) for the control of Dengue virus. Mostly, I'll be helping out in the insectory in rearing the mosquitoes, but will also do some DNA and RNA isolations and other odds and ends. It'll be a good chance to get some relevant lab experience and decide if I want to apply to their PhD program in the future. I'll be there for 6 weeks, between June 29ish and August 9ish. Then, I shall return to Florida, in time for my USF orientation on August 13th, and will start my M.S. in Medical Sciences program shortly after.
I haven't decided if I'll be bringing my car to blacksburg or not. On one hand, i found some pretty inexpensive airfare and figure i could probably get by without a car in bburg. On the other hand, the BT buses don't run as often during the summer, it's nice to have a car (even if i wouldn't use it much), and i'd like to drive up to NoVa some weekend to visit friends and such (or come visit me!!), and the car is also nice for partaking of the hiking and fun around the bburg area. Although a 14 hour drive from FL to VA would be exhausting! I need to decide soon before airfare goes up. As always, I'm indecisive, so I like hearing ideas. Have any of you spent a car-less summer in bburg and have comments?
