We witnessed the marriage of our friends Brian and Sandy Fong (from the 501st) yesterday, at the lovely http://www.blithewold.org/ in Bristol RI. It was elegant and yet simple, emotional and yet peaceful. What a perfect day for a joining of two very special people

"As we were growing up, our parents told us the story about the red string of fate. According to Chinese legend, the gods tie an invisible string around the ankles of men and women who are destined to be soul mates and will one day marry each other.

"An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet,
regardless of time, place, or circumstance.
The thread may stretch or tangle,
but it will never break."
- an ancient Chinese belief

The man and woman connected by the red thread are destined to be lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. No matter how this magical cord may stretch or tangle, the string will never break.

On Saturday August 21, 1999, a red string drew a boy from San Francisco, CA and a girl from Boston, MA together to Brown University. As Sandy and her parents drove to the campus for the first time, they got lost trying to find her dorm room. Seeing a random Chinese boy on the street, Sandy asked him for directions. Instead, he jumped into her car and directed her parents to the dorm parking lot. Brian was the very first person Sandy met as she began her new life in college. Even though he had a crush on her during their first year as friends, Brian was her dorm counselor and he wasn't allowed to date the freshmen living in his dorm. As three years passed by and Sandy and Brian were about to graduate and leave college, the red string drew us closer together. On November 22, 2002, we officially became a couple. Three more years later on August 1, 2005 Brian finally asked Sandy for her hand in marriage.

On May 23, 2009, no matter how far we're apart, whether going to medical school in Worcester or teaching in Providence, we're finally "tying the knot." "
