Well, among other animals the practice of killing young is not uncommon if there isn't enough food or other resources to support the extra bodies, of course most people don't feel that has any relation to the way we should think or act, but I'm a little odd.
More specifically to humans it is natural because it is something our body does for us, if it doesn't think we are ready for it or it detects something wrong with the fertalised egg, it will abort it naturally and a lot of the time before the person even new they were pregnant. I can't remember the exact figures and they would have been updated and made more accurate, but last I read something like 85% of fertalised eggs are aborted naturally by the body before the first trimester.
That is essentially our body saying it isn't ready to support a child growing inside it. As far as I'm concerned abortion is just us deciding that while our body may be ready to bear the child, we do not believe that we are capable of doing so, for any reason from the emotional to the financial.
i just wanted to say that while my opinion differs a lot from yours, i don’t want to get into some internet debate over it. i appreciate your eloquent, thought-through, and relatively unemotional response though, cheers.
No worries, I can appreciate that my opinion is not necisarily the right one, and also that even though some people have a similar opinion its for a very different reason, but thats just the way I think.
Out of interest, why don't you support it? or at least why are you mostly against the idea?
i'm mostly against the idea because personally, i believe it is taking a life, and i object to abortion as a convenient (although not easy) 'out' when falling pregnant by accident. i just hate the idea of pregnancy becoming a trivial thing to be discarded for less and less meaningful reasons and perhaps, in some cases, being seen as the fix for not bothering with contraception. if you don't want to be pregnant, take preventative measures.
i'm not, however, ignorant the fact that there are some pretty freaking good reasons for aborting and harrowing situations where it seems the only option, and that people can fall pregnant without wanting to for a variety of reasons even while being responsible about it. so i wouldn't say it should never be an option and i wouldn't venture to make the decision for others.
fundamentally, i am against abortion, but i don't believe life is quite that cut-and-dry.
