Tim o'brien seems to be saying that when a person does something that he or she is ashamed of that they always are sort of looking back upon it. He basically says that courage builds from a sameful situation. (check page 39 and 40) It seems as if the soldiers are feeling sahmeful becasue they are in Vietnam becasue most americans at that time believed we had no buissness there. the soldiers seemed to feel sorry for themselves. they were ashamed not only for being there but for not wanting to go. they were supose to be strong brave men but they did not want to die. embaressment and shame helped the soldier fight a better war in a way becasue they were embaressed not to go and fight for thier country. "I would go to the war-I would kill and maybe die- because i was embarassed not to." pg 59.
