Wear a zip-up jacket that you can un-zip while [bike] riding when you start to get hot. Works fairly well for me.

I do that in slightly warmer parts of the year, and it works fairly well.

I guess my main problem is that the one layer that protects against the wind (my rain jacket), is also the worst when it comes to me sweating. I melt when wearing it, and am in big trouble if I'm not wearing it, in this wickedly windy city.

Gaah.

Dan, here is what works for me: Wear warm as hell gloves. Warm socks (or two pairs of not so warm socks). Wear long johns (or "wunderpants" as we call them in my ring) underneath your regular old pants. Get either a balaclava, or just tie a T-shirt around your head (balaclava STYLE!) to keep wind from smacking you dead on, and also to conserve heat from zipping out the top of your noggin. Then if you layer your torso with some cotton (a good thermal is the best), you may be good. If your extremities and head are warm, the torso takes a backseat, and actually balances out nicely, cooling you off enough that you don't overheat (of course, it does get much colder up where you are, but that works for me).

Huh, I already do a bunch of this stuff... Sweet.

Let's see, got warm as hell gloves. My hands are often almost too hot. Could probably do with another set of socks, or break out those wool ones more often. And I actually recently got some absolutely fuckin' awesome Wunderpants recently. My legs are the warmest they've ever been in their life. I've got a toque (you might call it a beanie, but it's a toque) that I always wear, and my hood. I also sometimes wear a bandana over my face. I've got a thermal shirt or two, I suppose I should probably dig 'em out of that box.

So, if I do all that, you figure I can ditch the heavy sweat-inducing rain jacket? Do you see anywhere in my plan of attack that could use improvement? Or am I all set and ready to go?

(I was secretly hoping you'd reply to my request... Thanks a million, pal 'o mine.)

No problemo, but do remember to take any advice I give you regarding this matter with at least 25 graisn of salt, I do often have a hacking cough, and it may (or may not) be due to my inability to dress in a seasonally appropriate manner.

I shall be certain to consume salt with your advice, rest assured. What you say makes sense with knowledge I already have on the subject, thus increasing the likely-ness that it's solid advice. If you had advised me to pedal out there with nothing but a scarf and a smile, I'd have been more hesitant to accept your suggestion.
