Hey whoever's reading! I had my world dance performance today! It was so amazing and awesome and brilliant and perfect and fun and yay!
Our program included:
Improvizing an Ajberjan(sp) dance and a Chechen dance! (Yes- we did improv in front of a live audience!)
Group projects which included research on our chosen countries and a dance. (My group-Uzbekistan- also did a short workshop)
"Choreography Piece" (it was unnamed) which was a warrior dance from Azberjan(sp) which our TA Natalie choreographed for a few of us.
Solo pieces by grad students
a "circle dance"
...even more dancing!
It was really a lot of fun. And I learned sooo much! I mean, this course was very much a history class in disguise. The only difference being that instead of reading about it we were up on our feet doing it. THIS made me realize that I am a kinesthetic learner!!!! It ALL makes sense to me now! Yay! :P
BUT in all seriousness, this class taught me so much about the Middle East, and other cultures; and about using ones strengths to work with others (I was the "theatre student" in my group). It made me appreciate another culture that is completely different from my own. To experience a completely different culture using something done world-wide such as dance made me realize that through the arts and performances we are brought together to share stories and to celebrate who we are. So, no matter who we are or where we are from, while engaging in these practices together we are sharing an interest, working together, and getting along. It is something so powerful. It shows that we aren't all that different from eachother. And I think it's really truly sad that certain countries are viewed so negatively for reasons someone like I cannot even comprehend. I won't go into it because what do I know?
But yeah, I think I'll end with one last little note, and that is I believe we are going to be aired on 'Persian TV'. Ah, the little perks of "showbiz". :P
