He was afraid she wasn’t aware of the consequences of the game she was playing. One day the teasing was going to go too far, and she might not like where it ended. He couldn’t say the same for himself, but since he was trying not to spook her, the mixed signals were starting to get to him.
Kate used their professional relationship against him incessantly, playing their partnership as a game undercover when it suited her, but barely willing to give him more than friendship outside of scamming a perpetrator.
She wouldn’t hesitate to grab him and kiss him (again, he would concede he had started it), or writhe against him and whisper in his ear as long as it was for “show”. But he knew as well as she did that there were other ways to blend into a crowd that didn’t involve touching. He figured she wanted him as much as he wanted her, but she was terrified of what might happen if they made it real.
As far as he was concerned, she would be the last woman for him. He would never hurt her or leave her, and whatever he had to do to make it work for them, he would do it. Grow up, sacrifice, whatever she needed. He was tired of all that other stuff. He wanted for very little in his life anymore, and so far she was the only thing it hadn’t taken a snap of his fingers or a flash of his checkbook to obtain. He had had to work for her, and as a result he knew her like he had never known any woman before her. Still, there was more to her and he wanted to know all of her secrets, not just the ones he had had to practically pry out of her with a crowbar.
The day came when she once again went too far, and he grabbed her arm as lightly as he could manage, pinning her in place.
His tone was gentle, but his words held heavy meaning, and he could see the apprehension in her eyes as he said, “Kate, I think you need to employ some careful consideration before you try to faux-seduce me again. This might be the time it all gets a little too real for you to handle.”
Her pupils were dilated almost completely with awareness, attraction - fear? But her face turned defiant when she realized he had been onto her all along. Kate Beckett didn’t get caught at anything, and he had to hold back his customary triumphant smirk at her gradually increasing discomfort.
He had to give her credit, she was trying to cover it up. “We have a suspect to corner, Castle, you best let me go.”
He released her, but he leaned in close to her ear, pushed back her hair with a gentle brush of his hand, and let his breath caress the curve of her jaw. “Just remember what I said, Kate,” he warned in a whisper. “Next time, I refuse to be responsible for my actions.” He could see her suppress a shiver as he pulled back, but she only rewarded him with a glare.
This time, he let himself smirk. Oh, he had her, and now she knew it. The ball was in her court, and he anxiously awaited the next time she slipped up and he could deliver on his promise.
