This morning at work I was reading the New York Times online and I was really struck by this one story that my eyes welled up with tears. The article was about a Senegalese immigrant in New York whose mother brought him over when he was 14 and then left him to fend for himself when he was 14. He is now a Junior in High School and although he does not have legal papers, due to some law he is able to stay in America in order to obtain a high school degree. He is a part of a winning science project team that is supposed to compete in Atlanta and only recently did his teachers find out that he cant fly to Atlanta to participate because he doesnt have legal papers. The article was also saying that a few bills in the House and Senate would allow him to stay and go to college but they have yet to be passed yet.
His story really touched me. Recently there have been several stories like his about immigrants struggling to fit in or stay in America to obtain a good education and these stories have made me realize that I think I do really want to teach ESL in America. I really think I can make a difference there.
I have read many accounts by people who have moved to other countries to make a difference and when they return to America they realize there is so much work to be done at home too and I feel the same way. I came to Japan because I wanted to make a difference but I really think I can try and do that at home in America too.... or atleast I would like to give it a try.
Im very torn on the immigration issue as there are strong arguments on both sides but I do believe that people should be given a chance to improve their lives. hmmmmm
