Carolyn Schnurer Inspired Dress - Choosing a Pattern

Mar 02, 2012 21:15

I've become obsessed with the idea of making a dress inspired by this Carolyn Schnurer number, but I need some advice.

I've been mulling over what pattern to use. I don't want to replicate the dress exactly, but something similar (I've started working on the issue of fabric) that would be a bit more wearable and a little less literal.

I've got it narrowed down to three patterns and I'm hoping you can give me some feedback.

Whichever pattern I use, I will make the obi belt from Heather Ross's "Weekend Sewing".

Here are my three choices:

The BurdaStyle Heidi dress. I would remove the seam and pocket details from the front of the skirt, so I won't have to worry about matching the pattern.

The BurdaStyle Anda Dress. Super simple! There are several nice example of this dress on the BurdaStyle website that people have styles with an obi-style belt and they look fantastic. I do worry that if I used a fabric with a pattern similar to the inspiration dress, it will be a lot of geometric pattern, and will look unflattering. Does that make sense? I suppose I could just change the neckline, but I do really like the scoop neck.

Heather Ross's Kimono Dress. In all honesty, I think this dress looks sloppy in the book. It just looks like there's so much fabric and not enough shape. The neckline and hem look unfinished. The whole thing kind of reminds me of a hospital gown. I don't dislike this as much as it may seem, I just feel less sure that I would like the results with this pattern than the others. I would definitely want to make a lot of changes to the pattern.

I'd love to hear your two cents!
