dammit

dammit!
recently, i came across a guide to writing in english. in this guide, it was suggested that "damnit" is correct and that "dammit" is not correct.
i will state right off that it is important to me to know what is acceptable and what is not acceptable when we attempt to replicate spoken english or to record slang. but i will add that i am not an idiot-- in fact, i am both linguistically educated and naturally linguistically talented.
but i'll also add that my opinion is important to no one but me--
and my opinion is that "dammit" is the correct spelling of the contraction of the phrase "damn it" but that "damnit" is acceptable as a secondary spelling.
reason? pronunciation. if we create a contraction based on pronunciation, we do not need the "n" found in "damn." we do not pronounce this "n" when we damn "it."
why is pronunciation important? without pronunciation, we would not contract "damn it" at all; pronunciation leads to contraction.

OBVIOUSLY

so maybe i am a little bit bitchy tonight. bitching at those who use "damnit." assholes. (stupid assholes)
