Disclaimer: I don’t own Naruto or the characters used in this story.
Notes: For once, they aren’t going to be super old. I’m thinking Neji’s like 14 years old in this. But there’s not much of a relationship-relationship really going on. It could be just friendship or it could be preslash. Really, though, it doesn’t make much sense. I don’t think I elaborated enough. Ah well, enjoy if you can.
Summary: Apparently, there's a lot of trouble in paradise.
Neji believed the saying “love is blind” to be a little inaccurate. It was more “love makes you willing to oversee the little things that could eventually become big things that will inevitably ruin the relationship.” Only that was much too long and every time he repeated it in his head, the words would switch around and never stay the same.
He’d only been thinking such a thought for about an hour, though. His first and current relationship, which happened to be with a boy a little older than himself, was apparently “on the rocks” and he hadn’t even realized. Of course, as a ninja, he wasn’t completely ignorant of the signs. But, as an innocent teen in his first relationship, he didn’t know what they meant.
It wasn’t until Shikamaru came up to him and claimed, “Your boyfriend’s cheating on you, yanno” that he began to see the light. (And really, how the hell did Shikamaru find out about their relationship - Neji hadn’t told a soul!) The lack of affectionate touches, the eagerness to end their time together, the flippant way he disregarded meetings Neji tried to make all seemed to scream something else was catching his beau’s attention. (Plus, as loath as he was to admit, Shikamaru was brilliant, and Neji wouldn’t be surprised if he knew more about these relationship issues than Neji did.)
After pondering about this newfound knowledge for well over an hour, Neji trudged to his maybe-ex-maybe-not-boyfriend’s house. He was prepared to conduct an interrogation and get the information he needed - he was a ninja, and this was a mission. As his luck would have it, he caught sight of two lovebirds hugging on the porch as he turned toward his most-likely-now-ex’s house. He didn’t think they had spotted him as he turned on his heel and stalked away. He thought that was just fine.
Taking a hidden path back to his own humble abode, he trained his eyes on the dirt beneath his shoes. It was unusual, he thought, that he would feel so hurt and betrayed over such a thing. Neji wondered, almost absently, if this was how it felt every time a relationship failed. For a split second, he almost empathized with the multitude of girls that sob when their boyfriend’s dump them. He’d never fully stoop to their level though. There was no reason to cry over some boy whose only good quality was his stalwartness and shuriken abilities.
Instead, he decided a good hour of training would put him in a better mood. Within seconds, he found his feet subconsciously rerouting themselves toward the training areas. Just as he was about to step off the dirt path to venture into the woods, he sensed a presence behind him and threw a kunai at the offender while whipping around.
Deflecting the weapon easily, Shikamaru stared at the stoic boy. In a bored, uninterested tone, he asked, “Did you break up with him?”
“Tomorrow,” Neji replied, turning back toward the woods. “Tonight, I’m training.” He thought about asking the other to join, but quickly dismissed the thought when he realized just which lazy ninja he was talking to. Soon after, he started to walk toward a random training area before pausing in his step. Turning just his head to level his gaze with the boy, he very softly and very bashfully said, “Thanks.”
Shikamaru’s face did not change, nor did his body language. He only offered a “you’re welcome” in addition to a wave as he started to walk the opposite way. Neji watched him go for a moment, unaware of the small smile that was curving his lips.
