I don't seem to have too many major events to write about do I? Some people manage to write about day to day stuff in their journals and make it interesting but I guess I'm not as good a writer...or maybe not motivated enough!
Anyway, couple of things to note. I got a payrise! WHOOHOO! and a fairly decent one too. Basically me and another guy put in an equal pay claim to against another tech who was on a much higher salary as we were all splitting the work on an even basis. We were expecting to get offered some sort of compromise but the actually gave us what we asked for straight away! It was almost too easy... Maybe they're fattening us up for the kill!
Unfortunately I won't get to see the money just yet as I need to spend it on flooring for the kitchen and bathroom (and hopefully computer room since sliding around on my wheeles chair is gathering ripples in the carpet. SO I got this week off work to do that.
I also won the Spanner Award at work this week. We have this old spanner that doesn't fit anything so we made a label for it and turned it into the Spanner Award. Basically if you do something stupid you win it and have to keep it stuck on top of your monitor until someone wins it from you.
What happened was one of the guys decided it would be a good joke to send a message direct to my screen pretending it was a virus warning (this guy isn't the best techie in the world by any stretch) and he somehow thought that sending it from one of the servers would make me fall for it. We're talking about an ordinary net send here.
And also he spelt the name of the virus wrong.
So what do I do? I send a message back without thinking about where he'd sent the message from. The server then gets my message and forwards it out to every machine that has a current session on it. Oops
Luckily it's a temporary server for hosting a specific application which only a small amount of people were using, but still around 30 users suddenly got a message on their screens saying 'try harder next time - and learn how to spell'
So the helpdesk phone starts ringing and I have to send another message telling them to ignore it. It's lucky we have a pretty relaxed environment otherwise I could have got into trouble. Instead I get the Spanner and can look forward to weeks of piss-taking until someone else wins it from me!
