As I mentioned above, folks of coastal lineage (places like Charleston and Savannah) consider(ed) themselves quite distinct from the 'rednecks' inland.

This reminds me of an old Georgia saying:
The first question a person from Augusta will ask you is
"What is your mother's maiden name?"
From Atlanta:
"What business are you in?"
From Macon:
"What church do you attend?"
From Savannah:
"What would you like to drink?"

there is almost something like that in Gone With the Wind...about the difference between Georgia folk. The southern coast is definately one place I would like to visit one day
