New ground

Josh was out of bed before me so that he could get ready for his first day of work. We have multiple showers, but I decided to sleep in a few extra minutes (also, Snails and Molly are calmer when someone's still laying in bed, they think it's still sleep time and think the dad that woke up is crazy). I got ready and headed to the train and made it in time to buy a new 10-ride ticket and make the train. It was also running a few minutes behind which resulted in nearly everyone standing up before the train even stopped at Union Station so they could get a 'head start' off the train. I've never been the first person off, but I wonder if it really is a head start, there's just always so many people that you're bound to get stuck behind a drove of people who are just walking ever so slowly. The lines get backed up because typically everyone heads towards the escalators which move only so fast and carry only so few people at a time. Somehow it takes nearly 6 minutes to get outside and then I rushed to work. There were a number of fire trucks and ambulances outside of Willis Tower that backed up traffic for quite a bit just outside of Union Station. I still have no idea what was going on, but I've never seen that in the morning. The day started semi-productive with a great Scrum meeting followed by banging my head against the wall with this particular technology.

I had lunch with Kevin M. at Gage and the food was delicious. Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish it because different seasonings kept getting stuck in my teeth and caused some momentary pain, but the food itself was delicious. We got the chance to talk in brief about some ideas I had regarding the company and how the past three months have gone. Overall I am very happy and had told Kevin M. how this is the first job I've had that Josh hasn't said 'Just quit then' at some point. Granted, I've only been there three months, but Josh knows I enjoy it based on how I haven't had any complaints. We have a single client and they've given us an amount of freedom that is a double edged sword, but for the most part, has been unlike most clients I've dealt with and we have a product that is revolutionary in its own regard.

We got back to the office and the first thing I did was floss (I highly recommend flossing after lunch, especially if your dentist tells you to/suggests it may help). I got back into the groove and then had a meeting with the client. The meeting went mostly well and afterwards I went to the train station to head home.

I took care of Snails & Molly and ate a fair amount of leftovers because I was too lazy to cook anything and Josh was at a meeting. I got some chores accomplished around the house and called it a day after talking to Josh about his first day at the new job.

I briefly thought about how at various times throughout the day the 'new' territory I was getting myself into (and those around me). Josh's new job, the first client meeting without Kevin M. or Tom W., first Job to be 'Josh approved', first night of bad leftovers, etc. Really every day has certain things that can be perceived as 'new' or a 'first' time at things and we often clump it together with other similar experiences that may taint our real 'first' time. There's usually a range of emotions that accompanies new experiences that affect us less and less as we become conditioned with similar experiences. Sometimes this is a good thing, but sometimes it may help to appreciate the small variances that make each day unique.

No idea what was going on, but no one else really seemed to care/notice.
