When I knew that the pope will be coming this year to the Philippines, I became exhilarated. It was already twenty years ago when our country was last visited by a pope. I barely had memories of it because first, I was just 2 years old; and second, there's no way we'd get a chance in going to Manila to witness his presence.
Philippines is considered the only nation in Asia that is predominantly inhabited by Catholics. No wonder why Filipinos are so hyped up and would do anything just to see him in person. And I happen to be one of them.
I am so lucky that he'd be visiting UST, where it's actually near my place. Plus, I am an alumna, which even gave me a perk of getting inside the university much easier. I was having thoughts at first and decided to just see him pass by España Blvd from my unit. However, my friend encouraged me to go to UST instead. "It's just a little sacrifice. Besides, it's only a one-time opportunity," she said. That statement itself made me think of it again. Why not? He's the leader of the Church that I'm in-the leader that really makes sense.
I was there at 11 in the evening. And guess what! The vicinity of the university was already filled with people. We've been standing for hours, bumping to each other just to get a good spot inside; not to mention it was worse than squeezing yourself in MRT during rush hour. To cut the story to the chase, I gladly made it. Hooray!
Seeing him in person waving at us wasn't the only reason I came to my previous alma mater. I was also after his heartwarming message. I was already tearing up before he even said something, not to mention I was awkwardly hiding my emotions to my company. Although I wasn't that close enough to see him in person, I was already very happy with the decision I made; despite the fact of being in the state of veering from a comfortable lifestyle.
He is definitely the people's pope. He made it sure to pay a visit to Tacloban for the Yolanda victims, despite of the bad weather. It only means he truly cares for us, the Children of God. He has a very good heart indeed. What amazes me most is that Filipinos coming from different religions respect him. No wonder he's gained much popularity all over the world.
Thank you sa malasakit. We all love you with all our hearts! May God bless you always, Pope Francis!
