Dearest Damndest Portlanders,

I <3 you all so damn much. Every damn one of you. And I had no idea how much until I did something stupid and moved away. "But it's for grad school!", I told myself, "you'll be busy and it will be okay." I was wrong. If you love Portland, never move to the area around Phoenix, AZ. Sorry you're in Phoenix. I moved away from there and came here. Best decision ever.

I hear that more often than I should. (The whole, moved to Phoenix from Portland bit, I mean.)

My parents moved away the year I graduated high school. I made the decision to stay here instead of following them. There have been times when I regretted that decision, but I'd much rather live here than where they are now.

holy crap. I am doing almost EXACTLY the same thing! I lived in idaho and washington as a kid, and then I moved to Phoenix for a couple of years, and then I moved to Portland to finish my undergrad degree. Then I decided to go to grad school... why the hell did I choose AUSTIN TEXAS ( ... )

I had always heard people compare Austin and Portland quite favorably. I suppose it's pretty hard to overcome being in Texas, even though UT Austin has a lot of good programs. May your pain be brief and your return swift. I mean, seriously, what's not to like about stripey socks and clogs?

I should have added knee high argyle socks with mary janes to my list.

which is why I thought Austin would be okay... I'd heard great things. I just failed to factor in the whole "too busy for it to matter" thing... I'm pretty busy, so I don't get to visit Austin very often. it's lame.

I was born in Portland and spent 3 years in Austin..There is no comparison. That burnt orange mess has nothing on Portland!
