2260Lea tugged at the collar of her dress uniform. She was being forced to wear it in order to meet with the Ossarian delegation, and as much as she would have preferred to have been left out of this, Jim had thought it would be a damn good idea to have her there. Never mind that she had patients in Sickbay that needed her far more

"Thanks," she finally said before following him out of the building. The sun caused her to blink - it always took her some time to get used to natural sunlight due to serving on the ship.
At the vehicle, she took the goggles he tossed her, frowning but putting them on without question. She remembered reading about all the environmental problems that were going on during the late 20th and early 21st century, especially when it came to the ozone layer. Maybe this was because of that. However, when he put the vases into the bags he took out and they flashed, she jumped a little.
"What the--?" she asked softly. Before she ask about it, though, she found herself rolling her eyes at him. "Cars still exist in my time. This would be a museum piece, though."
Once they were in the car and strapped in, she looked toward the back where the vases were then over at Pete. "Can I ask...what exactly was that?"

Once they were in the car, he started the car and pulled away from the building. When she asked her question, he shrugged. "It's a special bag that we use to transport artifacts. It keeps them under control," he said.
As they started toward the Canada-US border, he glanced over at her. "Do you have a name or do they only give you numbers in the future," he said.

When Pete then answered her question about the bags, she frowned. "Control artifacts? You mean, you're used to them doin' weird ass things like bringin' people into the past?"
She shook her head. Yeah, this definitely wasn't the day she had thought she'd be having.
At Pete's question, she found herself laughing despite of herself. "Ya know, sometimes I wonder. They do give us serial numbers in Starfleet. But no, we've got names. Leandra McCoy. Doctor Leandra McCoy, actually. Ya got a last name, Pete?"

"Serial numbers? I can barely find the serial numbers on my electronics," he said with a laugh. "It's nice to meet you, Doctor Mccoy. It's Lattimer. Pete Lattimer."
When they got to the border, Pete flashed them his badge and they were waved through. "Were you born on Earth? You should like my aunt that lives down South," he said.

She then nodded at his question. "Yep, serial numbers. Makes us sound like regular ol' off-the-rack officers you can get at any corner store, doesn't it?" She laughed and shook her head. "And it's nice to meet you, Secret Service Agent Pete Lattimer."
As they headed into the States, Lea brushed her hair back from her face and looked down at her dress uniform when she noticed the border agent stare at her for a moment, suddenly feeling very out of place. Hopefully, she'd be able to get something less noticeable until she was able to get back to her own time. If she was ever able to get back to her own time.
"Sure was. Savannah, Georgia, actually. Spent all of my early life there before I decided to go to Duke," she told him. "Where's your aunt from?"

However, he found himself smirking at her comment on the serial numbers. "Does this mean you come with a year warranty?" he asked with a laugh, hoping she got the joke since he wasn't sure if humor was still appreciated in the future.
They traveled for a bit longer before he took an exit and got off the interstate and started down a backroad toward Old City. It was a route not many knew about and it would get them there quicker.
"She's from Mississippi. Teaches at Ole Miss."

At his crack about the one-year warranty, she found herself laughing. "Oh, I'm startin' to really like ya, Pete. Sometimes, I feel like I'm the one doin' the repair jobs after the warranty's run out."
Lea had never been up to the Pacific Northwest though she knew that much like the east coast, the area between Seattle and Vancouver formed almost one megalopolis. As they headed into the city, she looked out the window for a few moments, then turned her head toward him.
"Ole Miss? Really? My dad went there. Has gone there. Will go there. Damn, this time travel thing is damn confusin'. I almost went there myself, but I...decided to go to Duke instead," she told him. "And what about you? Where are you from? Or is that classified?""

"You're a doctor so I guess that's your job," he said.
It wasn't long until they were in Old City and Pete started them toward the river. As he did, he picked up his cell phone and hit one of the buttons, letting the Sanctuary know he was coming.
"Oh, cool. I wanted to go there but decided to stay close to home because of my sister. She got really sick after our dad died and lost her hearing. I just couldn't go away so I went to Ohio State, which is right up the word from where I grew up," he said.
When they went over the river, Pete turned at the first right after the bridge and started toward the Sanctuary.

Lea looked back out the window at as they started driving along a river area. Everything was so different from what she was used to. The buildings were all old-style architecture, where she was used to seeing old mixed with new, and the sky...it had a different tinge. Was that because of the pollution? There was also no sign of the shuttles that could always been seen going everywhere.
When Pete started talking about why he hadn't gone to Ole Miss, she looked at him, tilting her head. "Sounds like your sister is lucky to have a brother who cares so much," she told him. "I never had a sibling. Always wondered what it would be like."
As they turned, Lea suddenly noticed a huge building down the road, like the abbeys or cathedrals she studied in secondary school. So many of them were in ruins now in her time, though.
"Wow. What's that?" she asked, pointing it out.

When Lea noticed the Sanctuary, he laughed. He loved seeing people's reactions to it. He could still remember the first time he'd gone there with Artie and all the trouble he'd gotten into by touching things that he wasn't supposed to touch.
"It's the Sanctuary. Not sure if they're still around in your time. I guess they might be since you travel in space," he said with a shrug.
He pulled up to the gate and put in his code, and once the gates were open he grove up to the front area and parked.
"Come on," he said as he got out of the car.

She didn't know if the Sanctuary was still around in her time. She had never heard of it before, and she couldn't exactly check. If it were, it was certainly a well kept secret.
Once Pete had parked out front, Lea nodded and got out of the car, walking up with him to the front door.
"You said that they deal with situations like this. Do people travel in time often? Or did you mean somethin' more general?"
