Dog Mountain

Yesterday morning jonboi_net, rekre8, and I got an early start and hiked up Dog Mountain. The loop we did was around 7 miles (see the link for loop options). The day started in an eerily foggy way.

The sun eventually started to peak through the mist in a very dramatic way.

We hiked above the clouds!

A bit of patience led to some clearing by the time we reached the summit (2848').

There are a few more pictures on Flickr. John took some lovely pictures, too.

Most trail descriptions call this hike difficult, and it was as far as elevation gain, but otherwise the trail is very well maintained. We headed back to the trailhead on the Augspurger Trail, as the William Sullivan book suggested that route is easier on the knees. Trekking poles come in handy.

To get there, find your way to Highway 14 in Washington (we headed east on I-84 and crossed the Bridge of the Gods). Heading east from the bridge, the trailhead is on the left after 12 miles. It's well-marked with a big sign. Permits are required and can be purchased for $5 at the trailhead. There is a restroom near the trailhead along the trail on the right.
