Ianto's relationship with Jack is a complicated one, or at least that's how he sees it.
Initially Ianto had just been interested in getting into Torchwood, regardless of what he had to do to get in. In London Jack had always had a reputation, no matter how scarcely he was talked of, and Ianto always had every intention of using that reputation to his advantage if that was what it took. What he didn't expect was to find that not only was Jack attractive, but he was attractive to him. This was a part of the reason Ianto was ready to walk away after they'd caught Myfanwy, and if Jack hadn't made him the job offer then, Ianto wouldn't have bothered Jack again. But he needed the job to save Lisa, and when it was offered Ianto found he could not turn it down.
Ianto felt guilty about deceiving Jack from the start, but still felt as though it was something he had to do. He had to save Lisa, and he knew that was something Jack would never agree to help him with. His suspicions were only confirmed when Lisa was discovered.
After Lisa's death Ianto became extremely depressed, although for the most part he didn't show it. Although he did still hold some resentment to Jack, it was him who helped him recover from losing her, and without him Ianto would probably have been unable to move past her death at all. But he did, and somewhere along the line he came to love Jack. He never was sure when that was, but he was always careful not to tell him. He always meant to at some point, but there never seemed to be a right time. In the end he was forced to tell him at the last chance he got, and that was something he regretted.
One thing he's always been scared of it being forgotten, and so he was grateful for Jack's promise not to forget, even if he certain he could keep it.
