Wouldn't a re-import kill any new comments made on those entries on DW? That was my other concern (when I brought up the thing about backthreads the other day).
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a possibility. :|a I'll see what the FAQ says... maybe we can ask around Plurk? If it does, it would probably be better to backtag on LJ until the second import (which has to be done to pick up posts that were made in the interim, I'm guessing)... then suspend tagging until everything is imported again, then pick up any loose ends on DW.
I'm having some problems getting the importer to run a second time properly, but so far I've imported a journal and then commented on the imported version. If I can import again, I'll see if the comment gets overwritten. If not... I guess i'll have to ask around or start over or something.
It looks like it should work. I still think that to be absolutely safe it would be better to do it on LJ until a second import (on the off chance that for some ridiculous reason the community importer doesn't work like the journal importer, which I doubt), but doing it on DW seems like it would probably be fine.
There's a difference between merging and overwriting. Some sites work one way and others work another -- for example, for a long time, if you renamed a subject tag on LJ to a name that was already in use on that journal, it would not merge the two (this was intensely frustrating if you were trying to organize a lot of posts that had the wrong subject tag on them
