IMPORTANT POLL: Activity Check Alterations

Nov 07, 2011 19:50

Hello, everyone! The time has finally come to discuss a possible change in the Activity Check requirements. I realize this is long overdue, but we were all busy with handling the end of the military arc, so that's why there's been a delay. I hope that wasn't too inconvenient for anyone ( Read more... )

I'm completely in support of this change, and I believe it's simple enough for everyone. It's really not as complicated as I think some people see it--a lot will be solved just by tagging the post you tag into with your character's name and then calling it back. I'm thinking you probably don't have to link each post to be counted--in other games that have this kind of system you link the thread itself and label how many posts you did within the thread. Like...

Breakfast - 6 posts, etc. Which isn't that hard.

I would think it'd likely take only 10-20 minutes of efforts, which isn't that much when you think about it.

Might be more of a problem at NS, or if you have a bunch of threads that end up idling out due to threadmates. Then it's, like, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, etc.

Which is really how I've seen it elsewhere. It's not really that big of a deal. And for NS itself, you could just link the starting post maybe--not every tag. Like, "NS - 20 posts," etc. Does that make sense?

And I addressed the idling out above a little--that I've actually dealt with it with the current system and it's been handwaved as it's not my error but another's.

Then it gets tricky for the mods to add up if your partner doesn't link back or does it not to the "top" thread of the location they're in at that time, but to the comment on the end. They have to go digging. Then you have to figure out hiatus time, how many posts to do, etc. If I were totally new to this game, I'd be lost so quickly on it.

I get what you're saying but either way, it ends up as more than just a little work on all ends.

Very true, actually! I didn't think of that. I have seen that some people don't link to the actual thread. HMM.... Maybe if there were NPC volunteers to help.... Yeah, NS will definitely be the issue here.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. NPC mods can help, but it's still a lot of digging for the volunteers, especially if not everyone tags their posts, not every links the same, etc etc. I know I've had to go looking for a lost reply or two when updating my own tracking posts, and it's a hassle.

There's also the fact that we wouldn't need to list all of it. If we did two DS shifts and a NS in one round, and my character tagged six times personally within each DS thread, and how many ever in NS, I would just list the DS ones, and not even touch the NS stuff.

Since I was asked to clarify:

I imagine in this case we'd just require people to link us to their first post to nightshift (that is, the post made to their hallway) and then we could follow the links from there. But it's true that sometimes people forget to toss in a [to here] link and that could lead to time-consuming digging.

Easy enough if you're active. That's not counting the time where you have to compute hiatus time and factor it in to how many less posts you have to do. Besides, nothing is stopping people from being inactive for the meat of NS and then slamming down like 10 posts in one day, which kind of defeats the point of NS lasting so long.

Yeah, the hiatus seem does seem complicated, but I think it might be more that you put when you went on hiatus and when you came off of it. And usually it wouldn't even be a factor. On normal days, for me, at least, each of my DS shifts are probably... 6-18 posts from my character alone? So doing NS, and a DS would fulfill the requirements easily without even having to resort to labeling when and where you hiatused.

I think people get that, it's just more complicated with NS posts. You could have like 5 threads with one or two comments each cuz they're all moving posts and then do moving posts count? NS is the bulk of most people's activity, I imagine, so that's an issue that should be clarified.

That said, I find your email notifications will be more useful for finding and collecting links then tags. I always use my gmail notifs for AC.

I would think NS moving posts would count! It's effort, and for most people, around the same length as their normal posts. But yeah, like I gave above, NS does become more complicated.

...I should switch to gmail.

LOL any email notifs should do though, if it displays links or something, right? I imagine the LJ notifs look the same in any email client.

I actually agree with you about moving posts counting because you're still doing something with the character, but I dunno if we're supposed to be having that discussion here so... :x well there's my two cents I guess.
