here and waiting for the opposite one.~]The hall was as empty as she had seen it. Silence glistened as severe as any palpable source. Voices echoed in the distance, but here there was nothing. No one. No sounds, but the dull creaks of a settling building and shifting ghosts. Last night gave rise to a new awareness. She did not take the

Just as Peter was about to reach the stairs (he was definitely going to take the lead for this stretch, since the stairwell had the possibility of being dangerous, not to mention the bad memories that had been brought back by seeing Elle that morning), he was distracted by a buzzing noise that was coming from his pillow case.
His eyes widened slightly as he quickly pulled the sack forward to fish his radio out; they weren't going to be able to hear it properly otherwise. This was his first time hearing Marc's voice, as he hadn't thought to take his radio with him the night before. The only warning he'd had before the language switch had been that ear-splitting sound.
So Landel had been trying to sabotage their one chance at help, then. Peter frowned just at the thought, but it seemed like Marc wasn't going to give up that easily. And he even had a clue for them... that could apparently be tracked upstairs. Peter glanced toward the stairwell, wondering if they might have the time to check it out. They even had maps to check for the right place. Obviously the people who were being experimented on came first, but it was something to keep in mind.
"Well, that's interesting. Not sure if we'll have the chance to check it out, but maybe someone will talk about it on the bulletin tomorrow."

The description, vague as it was, was horrific. She almost regretted asking.
Unwelcome memories of the things she'd imagined over all the time running from the Company -- the threats her dad had made, that they'd do to her what they'd done to Elle. Turn her into that by pushing her to her limits and then pushing harder. Breaking her. She'd done her share of extrapolating, and none of it seemed pleasant. At times, it was downright gruesome. Testing, Claire had concluded long ago, was the nicer word for torture when they were using science as their scapegoat.
Just as she opened her mouth to respond, the radio went off and distracted them both. Her conversation with young-Peter came to mind. How shady the radio voices seemed. How patronizing and pedantic it all was -- how especially now, she couldn't help but realize that it was only happening as long as Landel was allowing it to happen.
"Yeah," she responded belatedly and all too rushed. "Yeah, I'm sure someone will mention it. We've got more important things to check out, right?" She offered a weak smile that was covering up her own worry that if they hadn't had plans, that Peter might check it out. That he might get in trouble. Judging by the genuine interest he seemed to be showing, she was worried he actually thought he could trust this guy.

Not that any of this resembled playing, regardless of what Landel would say on that intercom of his.
"Right," he said with a nod as he turned himself toward the stairs again, pointing his flashlight up it before taking the lead in their ascent. He just need to put the memories of Elle's death from his mind and get them to where they needed to go. It wasn't that hard, was it?
