Day 51: Lunch

Aug 14, 2010 16:35

Edward was glad to wake up to a period of respite. While he had been conscious during breakfast, he'd requested to remain in his room for extra "sleep", which had consisted waiting until the room was vacated to ingest the vial of Venom's blood. The vampire had lost his chance last night, but that might have been for the better; this way he wasn't ( Read more... )

622 only had to enter the mess hall to instantly remember what 'hamburgr' and 'hot-dog' meant. The smell alone was enough to prove that they were incredibly bad for anyone with a digestive system, but would taste amazing. True, he didn't have the highest standards, no one who'd lived off of dried rations for weeks before could be said to even have middling standards, but he was suddenly more looking forward to eating than he'd been three seconds ago.

He decided to try a little bit of just about every condiment they had, the nurse telling him the names of each that he was sure to forget--the tastes would all blend together before he could discern which was which--and made sure he also procured a heaping salad just to be safe. They said that was the healthiest option, and while he had no way to tell, not knowing what was in Earth greens, it was always a fair bet that as long as it wasn't poisonous to outsiders, local foods described as 'salads' would always be the healthiest option, provided it wasn't prefaced with 'meat' or 'heat attack' and whoever made it had washed all the pesticides off first.

With food procured and his mood therefore improved, he sat down to eat, watching the doors of the mess hall, curious to see if there were any new prisoners he didn't recognize.

Agatha, by contrast, wasn't paying a great deal of attention to her surroundings now that she'd piled her tray with one of each new thing- she was a little suspicious of the meat supposedly made out of vegetables, but curious too, and it had apparently been requested so presumably it had something to recommend it, right?

The point was that she just wanted to eat and think, and possibly sketch some things out on her napkin. She did not want to have to pay attention to seating arrangements, so she didn't, thus missing out entirely on the familiar prisoner across from her.

622 had noticed the attacker from last night enter the mess hall, but then lost her in the general crowd of prisoners coming in. And since she had been brainwashed, he kept telling himself, it was alright. In all likelihood, she wouldn't ambush him ever again.

Which was why he then dropped his burger in a startled half-attempt to get to his feet when she suddenly appeared in front of him. He quelled the reaction before it could get any further, but now he had condiments on his shirt, a burger strewn half across his tray and the table, and an unpleasant kick of adrenaline that had nearly made him reach for his tray as a makeshift weapon. I really need to stop making assumptions.

It was just a shame the staff were so on top of their materials, Agatha was thinking. It might or might not even be possible to smuggle a needle back to the room, she'd have to see how they had it set up before she decided; certainly nothing much bigger than that, though, so...

Wait, what was that noise?

Agatha returned to reality to find a calamitously-disassembled hamburger all over the table in front of her, and, when she looked a little higher up, an unpleasantly familiar face. "Oh God, it's you," she moaned, shrinking a little down into herself in embarrassment. She probably should have been paying attention to where she sat after all. "...should I go somewhere else? I could do that."

622 took a few deep, steadying breaths, trying to slow down his racing heartbeat, telling himself it's alright, she doesn't have the shock stick, she's not crazy anymore. Hopefully...

"N-no, it's alright ma'am," he slowly lowered himself down into his chair, feeling a little shaky from adrenaline, fully alert now. "I know you were mind controlled." That still didn't mean he wasn't going to be on edge, but how that was a done thing no matter whether she stayed or not.

And now his burger was all over the place. He started carefully picking up what bits he could salvage, trying to not make it obvious that he was dividing his focus between the food and keeping an eye on her. "I'm not going to deny that what happened hurt, though." The bandage on his arm was proof enough of that.

Now that she was paying attention, and not being a total idiot, Agatha could see perfectly well that she was making the guy nervous. Still, if he didn't want her to leave, she wasn't quite sure what to do about that, so she just focused her attention on her vegetable hamburger in preference to a field of vision that would include the spidery electrical burns peeking out from underneath the guy's bandage.

"Yeah, I'm sure it did," Agatha mumbled. "To be fair, so did what your friend did to me. Not that she didn't have every right!" she added, looking back up hurriedly and earnestly. "I just, you know, thought I'd mention it."

"It was in self defense," 622 said, leaving it at that. As long as it was lawful, no defensive use of force would ever be wrong to him, no matter how much overkill it might end up being.

"She's unhurt," he added, since it seemed relevant. "I've been in contact with her this morning." With his burger reconstructed, he continued eating, although a little more slowly than usual. Eating too fast while he was on edge wouldn't do him any good.

"Oh. Good." Agatha had actually been a little bit worried about that girl- the charge in the foil had been meant for slaver warriors, and they had less body mass than a grown human, but so did the kid.

God, this was so much more awkward than with Ema. At least her history with Ema contained other things than, well, last night. "Um, you've still got some stuff on your shirt," she said eventually.

622 nodded, lapsing into awkward silence. He really was glad Anise wasn't hurt. He hadn't done a good job protecting her, not when he'd ended up stunned on the floor, but at least nothing had happened to her.

"I know," he looked down, wiping at some of the stuff with a napkin and leaving a bloody red smear across the yellow smiling face on the shirt. "Casualty of lunch, apparently." Hopefully he'd get a chance to change his clothes before next shift. He'd just gotten clean and everything too...
