However, at the mention of the ring, the once princess turned her head to look at the object as Sora lifted his hand. "You did?" she asked, reaching out to grasp onto his hand with both of her own so she could hold his still, allowing her to look at the piece of jewelry. "I didn't get one, but I don't mind. I'm happier knowing that the man I traveled around with last night got it, since he didn't have a weapon or anything. He deserves something special too."
She couldn't help but wonder if Riku got one as well. Releasing Sora's hand, Kairi lifted her own to brush her bangs out of her eyes and to tuck a strand of red hair behind her ear. "I'm happy for you, though. Pretty lucky, hmm? Maybe with that we can actually get somewhere interesting, don't you think?"

Besides, on a purely practical level, they didn't know if the ring was dangerous or not yet. If it was unpredictable and possibly harmful, then he didn't want Kairi holding onto it. So even though it would suit her better (it even matched her hair!), he had to keep it for now. He slowly returned his hand to his side once Kairi released it.
"Well, at least one of us has one. And Riku might, too, if he ever shows up," he joked. Sora glanced over his shoulder, keeping an eye out for the older boy. "I kind of want to try this out tonight, but it depends on what he wants to do." It sounded like Kairi was all for it, though. While it would cause them to change their plans, there would always be a chance to check out the basement. This was special, and he wanted to know if it really worked or if the head doctor had just been pulling their leg.

A few distractions caught his attention along the way, but Riku ended up reaching his friends before too long. It didn't look like they were standing there for too long. Then again, that was hard to tell, but their facial expressions didn't give him the indication that he was finally arriving at a bad time; he had a bad habit of doing that regularly, and he wouldn't be surprised if now was any different.
He approached easily enough, extending his hand and stretching out his fingers to show them what they needed to see. It was a ring, and he wasn't sure if the others had one yet (he hadn't looked closely enough at Sora's hand), but it needed to be shown for the sake of sharing everything. "Looks like I've got something to work with, after all." How much it would be able to do was yet to be seen, but he refused to give up. His actions the night before weren't filled with the same motivation that he needed, but this was different now.
Riku looked expectantly at his friends and he hoped they were happy to see the ring. It could be trouble. After all, it was like taking a gift from Organization XIII or Maleficent, but he didn't see a problem with using things like that to his advantage if he had to. He didn't have qualms like that.

... Well, many things could happen, but she chose not to speak of them, however, because at that time the last member of their team appeared, and the once princess turned to look at Riku with a smile. "Hi, Riku." Her eyes were drawn down towards his hand as he revealed his ring as well, and she looked between her two boys with a sheepish smile. "Oh, you both got rings! That's great! I didn't get one, but I don't mind. The man I was with last night was extra helpful, so I'm glad that he got it instead of me." At that point her hand was placed against her chest, and she smiled.
... Except she was feeling slightly left out. Again.
Shaking the feelings away with a literal shake of her head, Kairi clasped her hands behind her back and smiled up to Sora and Riku with a slight tilt of her head. "So, shall we try them out, then?"

Right on time, Riku showed up, and Sora turned to him with a quick wave and a smile. But it looked like his friend had also ended up with a ring, which was technically a good thing, but Sora couldn't help feeling a little jealous. At the same time, he felt bad that Kairi was the only one who didn't have one, even though she seemed content with the person who had helped her last night ending up with it. Whoever it was, he must have been nice if Kairi had liked him so much. Sora was glad to know that she'd been in good company.
In response to Kairi's question, Sora glanced back over to Riku, pulling his hands up behind his head. "What do you think?" he asked the other boy. "Want to give it a shot?" Sora was all rearing and ready to go, but he and Riku tended to approach these things differently, so he wasn't going to shatter the stone on his ring without asking first.

"Let's do something else first." What, he didn't know, but he had a feeling that Sora and Kairi's haste was unwise. This was where his insight was needed. His fingers wrapped tightly around his ring, and he realized this was the best idea at hand. Having the ring made him feel confident, even if he confessed that he wasn't certain that it would help them. The electronics store wasn't exactly bustling with ways to get out at night.
Not having a suggestion stopped him cold, but Riku looked at his friends expectantly.

At the mention of doing something else, the once princess pressed her finger to her lips, tapping gently. "Hmmm, we could always go with the failsafe decision and once again try to get to the basement? Since last time we tried something stopped us in the Sun Room ..." the thought of whatever it was caused Kairi to shudder. It had been growing out of Riku, whatever it was ...
"Or maybe outside?" she asked in a softer voice, still somewhat worried about something lurking in the recreation field, whether it be a monster or someone under the control of the institute. "Or maybe something completely different, like up stairs to the other rooms ..."

Especially since Kairi went along with Riku's suggestion without a second thought. If Sora tried to argue his side, he'd just look stubborn, and so he considered Kairi's suggestions with a sigh.
"Well, this ring should take us upstairs near the file room, in theory, so maybe we can wait on that," he said with a halfhearted shrug. "I'm fine with trying the basement again, if you guys are up for it. Both the Sun Room and going outside will get us there, so it's just what you prefer." He glanced between the two of them, waiting for a decision. In the meantime, he quietly slipped the ring off of his finger and placed it into his pocket. So much for that.

But Riku's mind didn't stray to memories of the past. Though Sora played off everything like it didn't bother him, the lack of enthusiasm implied the truth behind his actions. He didn't like that Riku was taking charge. A small battle started within himself at the sight of this-mock Sora for being so upset or feel guilty because he did-but instead, he decided to pretend that Sora was okay with everything. They could talk later, elsewhere, when Kairi wasn't there.
She didn't need to know that old tensions could still arise between them so easily. Even if Riku had a feeling she could tell anyway.
"Let's head outside," he decided. If he was going to take charge, he had to now. "We'll let other people handle the basement. We've tried there too many times." Or had made plans that didn't turn out. He was sick of it.

Despite ether of the boys not openly saying anything, the once princess could feel a slight tense wave pass between Sora and Riku, but she quickly tried to ignore it. She didn't want things to end up like they had before the whole keyblade fiasco happened. They had fought during that time, and she never wanted to see them like that again. She'd do anything she could to prevent it, in fact.
"Should we go over the wall?" she quickly continued, frowning as she bent down to pick of her sword from the wall. "Last night I was in a forest outside of the walls ... we could try to get there?"

They were going to have to worry about special counseling patients no matter where they went, so Sora wasn't too concerned about that. Both Kairi and Riku were aware of the dangers, and that was about all they could do to prepare.
"A forest, huh? Well, we could try to find it," he agreed with a nod. "I don't know what direction it's in, but it's worth a shot. And if we find something else, then that'll still be worth something, right?" The more that they uncovered, the better their chances of beating this place, or so he figured. Seeing how no one seemed to have any protests, Sora clicked on his flashlight and started to move, leading them down the hall toward the recreational field.
