Night 50: Main Hallway, 1-West

Jul 09, 2010 20:42

[from here]It looked like the hallway opened up over here. Guess he couldn't expect to just run around and follow a linear corridor forever, but now he had to figure out which way he wanted to go. Normally, he'd just run down whatever hallway he happened to lay eye on first, but again, he was running a liiittle blind here ( Read more... )

And bingo! This was the spot where the three of them had met up last night, so Zack supposed it made sense that Cloud would decide to wait here. It was funny, how they'd both figured it out without actually having to write it out to each other. Though it was probably better to make a habit of that, just to be sure. Unless they designated this hallway as their meeting spot from now on, which would work just as well.

Cloud was easy to spot, even if he might not have thought that was the case himself. Zack had gotten pretty used to keeping an eye out for him, and that hadn't gone away just because they weren't on Gaia anymore. And even if Cloud had clearly grown into his own skin in a serious way, Zack couldn't just stop himself from wanting to watch over him.

But they could work together, and that was good. They had been able to do that even back when Cloud was as green as they got, though. They had gotten along from the start.

"Hey!" he greeted, perhaps louder than would be advised. He slung his arm around his friend's shoulders and grinned. "So, were you the one who ended up with that ring, or was it ninja girl?" He knew that their goal for the night was a serious one, but he didn't really approve of souring things up.

Good. That had been easy enough. Cloud smiled back at his friend from under his arm. It had been a while since it had just been the two of them, and though extra hands were always helpful, he couldn't deny being a little thankful that they'd get to have this time again. (Especially now that he was conscious for it.)

"Sorry. Looks like Yuffie's got it." And honestly, that didn't bother him. She wasn't likely to lose it, and and was able to take care of herself better than some people gave her credit for. "Hopefully, anyway. I'd hate to think we were left out completely." It was possible the ring was just a trap, and doing what the Head doctor said would, either immediately or after they'd gotten used to it, take them somewhere they definitely didn't want to be.

The serious goal did have to be addressed at some point, however. "Don't suppose you have any idea where to start? Best I can think of is the second floor, but I'm sure other patients have combed every inch of that area without any luck." Which might mean that they just had to comb harder - not an easy task given the usual unknown time restraints.

Cloud's smile didn't really match his own, but it was about as much as Zack could expect from the younger man. He pulled away and leaned himself against the wall soon after, crossing his arms over his chest as he watched the other patients passing by (he was still futilely keeping an eye out for a pink ribbon) and listened to what Cloud had to say.

So Yuffie had gotten it. Zack felt his shoulders slump, but in the end there wasn't much point in being annoyed by it. The girl wasn't as bad as he often made her out to be -- maybe if she was still ten or so, he would have been worried, but in this case he'd just have to remember to ask her about the thing. Besides, he and Cloud had other things to be doing tonight, so if Yuffie was able to take out some time to test the ring for them, then that would be fine by him.

"We'll ask her tomorrow," he said, but it looked like it was time to move onto the task at hand. Zack frowned when Cloud brought up the second floor. Why there? "Does that mean you don't know her room number either?" he asked with a tilt of his head and a small sigh. "I thought we'd start there, but if none of us know it, then..." Well, that made this a lot harder. All they could really do was wander and hope that they'd run into her, which seemed unlikely at this point. Zack just wished there was an easy way to confirm whether or not the girl was even still here.

"Her room... Right. Of course we should check there first." Was it really that simple? Had she just been in her room the whole time? Cloud had already been operating under the assumption that she was missing completely, given that he hadn't seen her at all the past couple days. It didn't seem feasible that she was avoiding them. That just wasn't like her.

But Zack was right. Ruling out her bedroom wasn't the best option. If there was the slightest possibility that she'd be there, they had to take it. For all they knew she'd caught a cold the day of the field trip (even though he hadn't seen her there) and had spent the time since resting up. ...It was a shame Cloud's luck was rarely that good. He found it hard to be optimistic about the situation.

"Last I checked... Yuffie was in F4. I don't think I ever got Aerith's room number, though." The revelation caused him to frown deeply, crossing his arms over his chest. How could he have missed out on a detail like that? "There's only one woman's block though, right? If all else fails we can check every room."

So Cloud didn't know it, either. How had all of them forgotten to ask? It hadn't seemed like the most important detail at the time, but now it was basically keeping them from knowing what had even happened to their friend. "Yuffie didn't know it, either," he said with a dismayed shake of his head. "I'm M57, for the record." Zack wasn't planning on going anywhere, but at this point he just wanted to make sure that they covered all their bases. There was no telling what might happen in this place.

Cloud had a point, though. Even though it would be tedious, there wasn't all that much to search when it came down to it. Zack was used to moving through areas and checking out every nook and cranny for useful items or clues, so this wouldn't be that different. If Cloud was up for it, so was he.

"Yeah, why not? At least that way we might be able to know for sure. Unless she went out already, but I don't think she'd be running around without at least telling us about it." Besides, she hadn't walked past them in the time that they'd been standing here, and both of them had been pretty quick to head over.

Not interested in wasting any more time, Zack gestured down the hall. "This way, right? Let's go." Hopefully Cloud wouldn't mind him taking the lead this time around. Without further ado, he got going.
