Getting back to California was the goal, but the method by which to accomplish it was more complicated. It wasn't something Castiel had been forced to think about before, but now that he couldn't move around from place to place with merely a thought and a flap of his wings, he would need to give the situation some more consideration.
Even if he could simply walk out of here (and that was seeming less likely, considering the garbled message he'd been forced to listen to in that room; on the other hand, the door had been unlocked), he would need to discover if he was in the same state or somewhere else entirely. The fact that English had been spoken by that disembodied voice meant he was most likely still in the same country as the Winchesters, but it was a large one. With no idea of how much time had passed since he'd activated that sigil, he could literally be anywhere.
In other words, he would need to locate a local and question them. Thus far he seemed to be on his own, but that voice had been addressing multiple people, so it seemed likely that he would run into someone eventually. Castiel knew that questioning humans was not his forte, but he had picked up enough from Dean and Sam that he was confident he would get the answers he needed eventually.
He'd barely covered any ground before he reached a door to his right, but Castiel chose to inspect the rest of the area before he stepped through it. Moving to the left instead, he found three other hallways like the one he'd come from, all lined with doors that most likely led into a room like the one he'd woken up in. That added strength to his belief that this was some sort of prison, but most prisons he knew of didn't let the prisoners loose.
While he could have searched the rooms for other captives, in the end Castiel decided that searching the rest of the building would be more helpful. He returned to the door he'd first spotted and found that it opened with much less trouble than the first.
