When they told him he would have a visitor, Nigredo could not even feign surprise. He had, after all, asked the one who looked like Citrine to visit again. Despite the falsity of her presence, the child had liked her in the sense that out of all his siblings, she had been the most forgiving on his sanity. Not to mention, a part of him wanted to ensure her health. That her death was a faraway prophecy.
He followed the nurse to the lobby and as directed, found a seat by the other entrance. While the part that loathed the visit tugged restlessly at the wrappings on his injured hand, the rest remained dead calm. Prepared. Every part of him was ready for this instant, for the first time in days. It was disgraceful how he had let his concentration and constitution fall in the past week; it didn't matter what the circumstances had become, it had all been uncharacteristic of his usual demeanor. The fact he could hold every thought in limbo now was a miracle, something like a blessing.
Green eyes gazed unwavering at his hands. Hopefully, she would arrive soon, before the calm he held broke under unseen tension.
