Night 49: Employee Locker Room

May 31, 2010 15:28

[From here]Scott couldn't tell if they were back at the Institute or not right away. It seemed like they were, what with the lack of windows and the same tiled floor as everywhere else, but under the beam of his flashlight, everything looked so brightly coloured. The only other place that had this much colour in the Institute was the Arts & Crafts ( Read more... )

“It was either that or getting gnawed on by zombies,” Shinichi reminded Scott, taking a look around. They’d been pretty lucky so far in the whole ‘not getting attacked’ department, but it never hurt to be prepared. Both of them had enough war wounds as it was. The detective clutched his skewers in one hand and his flashlight in the other, casting it in a slow arc around the room. Was it just him, or was the beam getting a little bit dimmer? Almost like…shit.

His batteries were running out, weren’t they? That was just his luck. Good thing Scott had a flashlight too, or else they’d be hosed if the batteries decided to give up the ghost before morning. Shinichi flicked his off, deciding that they had enough light right now to risk it.

“I guess we can try figuring out if there’s a pattern to all this portal stuff. That’s like a video game.”

Scott had changed his own batteries a few days prior, and judging from how long the first set had lasted, he was betting that they'd be good for at least tonight, but not much longer after that. Under normal circumstances, he maybe would have suggested they go to the Janitor's Closet to get replacements, but, you know - magic doors.

"Guess you're right," Scott acknowledged with a nod, putting on his best thinking face. "Let's see, so we went from that first floor hall to an office in... somewhere, then to the showers I think on the first floor, then some tiny kitchen that's different from the one near the Sun Room, then that lounge-y type place, then all the way out in Doyleton of all places, and then here. Wherever here is." Scott crossed one arm over his chest and raised his free hand to his chin, scratching it in what was at least the appearance of thought ( ... )

They all had floors.

Man, with crack thinking like that it was a wonder that Scott hadn’t gotten them all out of the Institute already. Shinichi rolled his eyes, but at least he had an opportunity to show off now. He smirked. “Elementary, my dear Pilgrim. Besides having floors…they’ve all been places that patients don’t usually get to that often, with the showers being the notable exception. Even during nightshift, I don’t think many places get here.” And where ‘here’ even was was debatable. It looked like a locker room, of course, but where? “I’m pretty sure that most of the rooms are staff-only; our friends the immortal Cokes definitely came from a staff-only room, since they seem like they’d rather die than let us have caffeine here. And…how many rooms that we have access to have lockers? Whatever’s going on-and I have no idea how it’s happening-we’ve suddenly got access to all the rooms that only nurses get to go to. Meaning that the next one will probably be a staff room-probably on the second floor-as well.” ( ... )

[from here]The first thing he noticed upon stepping into this new area was that the rain had mercifully stopped. Or rather, they'd simply found themselves under a roof again. And maybe those in charge were taking a tiny amount of pity on them, because the smell told Cloud what sort of place they'd wound up in now without him even having to illuminate anything ( ... )

So it had taken some effort, but it looked like they had finally made it to some shelter. Not without paying some sort of price, though. Zack shook out his drooping hair and wrinkled his nose at the smell of feet that seemed to permeate the locker room. Was this meant for the people who worked here? It definitely wasn't for them, seeing how they already had their closets to store things in ( ... )
