Day 19 - Breakfast

Oct 22, 2006 13:36

As Ginji was ushered through the halls towards the cafeteria he felt a little dizzy. He felt like something was very, very wrong but he wasn't sure what. It wasn't just the fact that he had woken up in the middle of some strange place, or the fact that Ban was no where to be found. Something else was wrong. Something important. Something that he ( Read more... )

Lust followed her nurse into breakfast, her calve bandaged and cleaned but still hurting. A quick glance around the cafeteria revealed two things: one, Haru was alive and well. Two, everyone she would normally go and sit with was already engaged in conversations. And with people she had no desire to expose herself to first thing in the morning.

At least she had done something last night, small as it had been. She took pleasure in killing the creatures that roamed the building at night. Calf still aching, Lust got herself breakfast and sat down by herself.

Morning was more harsh than the evening, River decided as she was ushered by her entourage of nurse and orderlies to the cafeteria. Evening was something cold and ominous, but morning was so much worse... Too-wide smiles and fractured brightness glared brilliantly in the evidence of their falsehood. Everything about it all was violent, moreso than it was when the lights went out. Everything about it all was broken in a logical way ( ... )

"Hmm?" Lust glanced up from her breakfast meat, head tilted towards River. She wasn't surprised to see the girl, she tended to keep to rather select company. And for whatever reason, that included Lust.

"Who was looking for me?" She could take a stab in the dark, of course, but she didn't want to make a fool of herself. Though she realized that with River, she could perhaps glean a few hints to what lay beneath the surface. Her own surface. She set down her fork and leaned her chin on her hand, looking at the girl carefully.

"You can see what's inside a person's mind, can't you? Is it all random, or can you control it at all?"

A stab in the dark soon became a figure in the light whose steps sounded just as loudly as usual on the cafeteria's floor, even if there was a slight limp to them. The source of the fatigue could be plainly seen; the Ishbalan's left arm was almost completely wrapped in bandages and hung in a sling from his neck even as he used his right to carry a plate of waffles and sausages.

Scar frowned a little at the two females of their "family unit," so to speak, then took a seat across from them. He looked towards Lust.

"You're injured."

River's eyes shifted to look at the floor, which had apparently become very interesting in the past two minutes seeing as though she didn't look up again for some time. Yes or no. It was a simple answer, not something she could skirt around or say more truthfully than it could be said ( ... )

"We'll talk more about this later," Lust said as kindly as she could manage when Scar approached. So the girl could see into peoples minds. Perhaps... well, Lust would speak with her on it later. Her eyes lifted and she looked over Scar, focusing on the sling that held his arm.

"You're worse off than I am," she pointed out. "I ran into a few rats last night. I've suffered worse in this infernal place." She shrugged. But she flicked her gaze to Scar's eyes, if only for a moment. He had noticed.

"Yes, well, Scar oftentimes makes it rather difficult to take care of him." There was an almost teasing note in Lust's voice now. "It's not your fault. For all of his gruff and grump, he is a bit of a hero." She paused, her fork halfway to her mouth. "I take it the two of you encountered something rather nasty?"

It was a wonder that Inara managed to maintain her composure on the short trip to the cafeteria, considering the humiliating name that the nurses called her coupled with the bright halls that stood out in contrast against the darkness that had enveloped everything she'd seen in the dead of night. It was a shock, but she had been trained to keep her chin high in circumstances like this. Breaking down would serve no purpose other than to give them more fuel to play this little game of theirs ( ... )

It was after he sat down that Scar blinked as River not only pointed out his own wounds but made a claim that she had been the one who should have been protecting the others.

"You--it--"

But before the Ishbalan could get a full sentence, Lust was already speaking in the same kind of tone as the girl, and Scar couldn't help but frown not only at the low-blow comments, but at the blatant attacks on his social character (or lack thereof).

It wasn't like he much cared for appearances, but it... hurt a little, to hear things put so blunt--

Hurt? The Ishbalan paused in thought and then shook his head. He'd lost more blood than he'd thought ( ... )
