Day 23: Lunch

Apr 11, 2007 11:45

The second the intercom sounded, while the man on the intercom was still talking, Ashton pulled himself off the couch in the Music Room and slowly made his way to the door. He walked, glided even, as if he were a ghost in a dream. The nurses had already filed up to escort the patients to the lunchroom, and one bustled over to walk Ashton those few ( Read more... )

Tsuzuki was feeling marginally better when he was lead back to the cafeteria for lunch. Crying and talking with Amaterasu had gotten most of the emotional stress out of him, and the shower had given him a chance to calm down and think. Especially since he'd hidden himself away in the corner, unwilling to talk to anyone else. Not entirely like him, but he needed a little time to sort things out ( ... )

The last thing Hisoka needed at this point was a shift change. He was exhausted, emotionally unstable-- though he was adamantly determined not to admit that out loud-- and he was actually getting the opportunity to get some sleep.

Not that the nurse really cared about that, it was time to eat! The shinigami was suddenly glad he was so tired, beheading an obnoxious woman would probably be more than enough motivation for the drug-happy staff to pounce. Then again, being drugged would lead to sleep...

The boy sighed, sending one last glance at Ritsuka, who looked as if he was to meet his own doom in the form of a nurse. He might as well go along for now, but if she touched him one more time... The walk to the cafeteria was a quiet one which Hisoka was thankful for, the music had eased his headache but it still lurked like a bad cough and he needed nothing to draw it out again ( ... )

Tsuzuki looked up when he noticed someone sit down beside him. He was fully prepared to greet the person with a cheerful smile. What he wasn't prepared for was seeing Hisoka sitting next to him. He wasn't prepared to see him looking so fidgety, either. Was he nervous?...

It dawned on Tsuzuki that this was probably the best form of apology that Hisoka could give. He'd always been so stubborn... But he was raised like that, right? And just coming to willingly sit by him was enough of an indication that Hisoka wasn't angry with him.

Tsuzuki didn't mention any of this, though. If Hisoka wanted to keep it silent, he could do that. Instead he smiled warmly, and noticing that the boy didn't have a tray of his own, offered one of the pastries to him. "You want a churro? They're really good."

Hisoka was almost tempted to let out a sigh of relief, instead merely relaxing as he glanced up. Tsuzuki understood what he was trying to say and wasn't mad at him-- not that he had been worried... much...

Looking at the proffered stick of cinnamon sugar Hisoka made a disgusted face in attempt to hide his earlier relief.

"Keep your heart failure, I'm fine."

Almost as if on cue, his nurse arrived, placing a tray with a bit of everything the cafeteria was serving in front of the boy. The heart-failures on a stick were there too. With that the nurse chided the boy to "not skip anymore meals" before disappearing.

Annoying woman.

Hisoka pushed his tray towards Tsuzuki.

"Enjoy."

Tsuzuki grinned a bit at Hisoka's response. It was water under the bridge now. Things were back to normal. Well, as normal as things could be when your were trapped in a weird building.

Tsuzuki had to restrain the squeal of delight when Hisoka pushed the tray towards him. He had caught what the nurse had said to Hisoka about skipping meals. Was he doing this frequently?...

"Are you sure?" he asked, using every ounce of self-control that he had to resist just gobbling down the food. "You should really eat a bit. It's not healthy to starve yourself, you know. You'll get sick."

And Tsuzuki looked as if it was Christmas all over again, that idiot. It was only food, not some rare silver.

At his partner's worry Hisoka just waved his hand as if to brush the words away. He'd eat the moment they served something edible.

"I ate a while ago." Which wasn't exactly a lie, he had eaten at brunch yesterday. At least he thought he did, he couldn't really remember too well at the moment...

As much as the voice in the back of Tsuzuki's head screamed 'take the food! take the food!', he was still apprehensive about it. He didn't want Hisoka getting sick...

"How long was a while ago?" Tsuzuki asked, trying not to be too pushy. He didn't want Hisoka yelling at him again so soon. Even though he knew it was likely to happen again before the day was out. Just not as violently as he had before.

He should have known this would happen. Tsuzuki might have had his moments of idiocy, but he wasn't a fool, which was a real pity considering he couldn't just point to the food in hopes of distracting him.

But if he had some sort of candy...

The boy muttered incoherently under his breath, a faint scowl on his face.

"Brunch."

Tsuzuki could see the scowl forming, but he was too worried now to care. This was lunch. He hadn't seen Hisoka eat during breakfast... And if the last time he'd ate was 'brunch', then he must not have eaten dinner last night, either. And despite his bias in the favor of food, Tsuzuki was quite sure that not eating for at least a whole day--maybe longer--was very unhealthy.

"You really should eat something. If you don't like any of this, maybe I can get one of the nurses to get you something else?" Try as he might, Tsuzuki couldn't keep all of the worry from slipping into his tone.

What was Tsuzuki, his mother? Hisoka's scowl deepened, he could take care of himself even if he wasn't at the moment Yet as much as he wanted to pummel that into his idiot partner's head he knew nothing short of actually eating would shut him up. That and the boy had a feeling that if he tried anything he'd fall over and then Tsuzuki would freak out more.

A lose-lose situation.

The boy glanced at the food, stomach roiling at the sight of whatever it was. It looked disgusting... At least they had some sort of rice...?

Tsuzuki watched Hisoka eye the food, but wasn't quite satisfied. Eyeing and eating were two completely different things. Tsuzuki wanted to see Hisoka eating and not starving himself.

"Please, Hisoka?" He decided that if flat out begging didn't work, he might have to resort to more drastic measures... Once he thought of more drastic measures, of course.

And that was underhanded. While the boy had no problem when Tsuzuki used his Death Glare also known as the Puppy Who Was Kicked Oh-So-Brutally And Needed Love gaze on Tatsumi, Hisoka did not particularly like being caught in its beam.

And now he knew what Tatsumi had to deal with on a daily basis. The man needed a raise.

The shinigami narrowed his eyes on his partner, silently promising pain.

"I'll try some of it if you stop making that face."

Tsuzuki smiled and nodded, pushing Hisoka's tray back towards him so he could eat a bit of his food. He didn't mind the scowl. He was just glad that Hisoka had given in. Even if he did have to resort to pleading...

"It's not so bad. Really," he added as an afterthought, though he still wasn't expecting Hisoka to eat very much of it. But as long as he ate at least half a taco, or something like that, Tsuzuki would be satisfied.

Hisoka was already regretting giving in as he stared down at his tray. This didn't look remotely edible despite the fact that everyone else was eating it... But his word was his word and he had said he'd try it.

Gathering his courage, Hisoka grabbed one of the circular breads on the tray and bit into it cautiously. As much as he hated to admit it, it really wasn't as bad as he had been expecting...

Tsuzuki took a moment to consider if he should point out to Hisoka that only eating the tortilla shell wasn't going to cut it. But that might be pressing his luck. Still, he could try...

"Um, you kinda have to eat it with the stuff on it. Or at least something on it. Just the shell isn't really much better than nothing at all."

Hisoka's eye brow twitched slightly. Honestly, he saw no problem with merely eating the 'shell' or whatever it was called. Tsuzuki just needed to breathe for a couple seconds, or perhaps just start eating.

"There's air on it," He replied grumpily. "And possibly botulism."
