The ground seemed to even out as they reached the southern edge of the forest, and the trees grew scarcer. As they advanced further, Anise could feel flat, solid rock beneath her feet, though it was cracked and crumbled in various places.
Ahead, the silhouettes of buildings gradually came into sight. Most of the shadows were uneven and oddly-shaped, as very few of the structures actually retained enough walls to stand up straight. The closer they drew to those shambles, the more debris littered their path. Anise pointed her flashlight around as she walked, illuminating the first of the crumbled buildings. Bits of furniture poked through piles of debris as a somber reminder of what the rooms may have once been used for. A dining table, a reading chair... it was kind of depressing to look at.
"Here it is." Anise's usual bright cheer dimmed somewhat upon entering the town, and instead of announcing their arrival cheerfully, she spoke in a calmer, more even tone.
