Day 48: Sun Room (Fourth Shift)

His mane was still damp from the ridiculous human cleaning ritual, something that Scar found rather dissatisfying. At the very least he had been able to leave the showers quickly, so the change in tactic had at least worked for now. There was a major downside, however; he had to put up with a certain female's well-meant praise as he ( Read more... )

The shift change gave Erika a chance to think, ignoring the Courtyard at the moment in favor of sitting in the Sun Room, sitting in a chair and looking at the bulletin board thoughtfully. Now that Erika thought about it, the chance that this gameboard was not of Battler's design was a possibility she was willing to accept: On one hand, it was chaotic, poorly organized, and a pitiful attempt at making an engaging, solvable mystery. On the other hand, this sort of precise design and the complete disregard for Beatrice's own setup was very much unlike him, considering how smitten he was for his beloved Beatrice.

The detective scoffed to herself, before sitting up and looking around. There was not enough evidence yet besides Battler's own admission to fully dismiss him from responsibility, but Erika knew a better way to do that. This man, who called himself the Head Doctor... finding more information about him was the key to figuring out this place.

And what luck! Instead of having to try her luck on the bulletin board, there existed a person who could possibly give her this information. Spotting the woman she spoke with yesterday, Erika stood up and brushed her hair back before making her way to where Momo was sitting.

"Good afternoon, Momo-san. It's me again, from yesterday," Erika smiled, once she got close enough. "Do you mind if I sit?" It seemed strange that Erika would ask before doing so, but on the other hand, there was no fun in trying to irritate someone who wasn't already irritated.

Glancing up, Momo gave Erika an inviting smile. The 'detective' was still very entertaining to the shinigami and she was curious what the girl had learned. It was like cracking open a living mystery novel and reading how the detective went about discovering evidence. Momo did miss reading. The selections in the library were not that great.

"You are welcome to join me, Furudo-san." she said, moving her sketchbook out of the way to a place where it wouldn't bother Erika or get wet from the shinigami combing her hair.

"How was your night? I hope this morning wasn't too jolting for you. It tends to be for about the first week."

Momo didn't miss a beat, did she? She was so helpful it was almost suspicious, as someone dropping clues in the detective's lap without any care in the world was always written off as suspicious. In a third-rate mystery, she supposed Momo would be the mastermind. In a first-rate mystery, she would be the mastermind behind a scheme that included not just the mystery, but the truth of the story. Which was one was she, Erika wondered?

Of course, she could also just be a do-gooder by heart. That was a boring possibility, but one Erika considered nonetheless as she took a seat next to Momo. In response to her question, the detective just gave a nonchalant shrug.

"It was slightly jarring, yes. I'm more interested in how that happened, though. I examined myself in the shower during the morning and found no trace of sedatives used, or any bruises or marks that indicated I fell. Quite a trick, to return all of the patients to their rooms seemingly with magic."

It was a trick that she would solve, and perhaps Momo held some clues. Or red herrings, but it was worth listening to the other girl at any rate. Thanks to the help of the android-woman, Erika would be able to check her story with Momo's at the very least. That was the reason she continued that line of questioning.

That was not the reason she actually chose to speak to Momo, though that reason could wait for now.

The thought of Momo as a mastermind was very amusing, though given what the shinigami intended on doing regarding the basement and the information she was purposefully keeping from the people dear to her, perhaps there was a bit more to her than the general 'do-gooder' title. As it was, Momo seemed to be little more than she appeared. The detective didn't know what she was sitting with.

Ah, well, magic is what most people generally call something they don't understand, despite the origin of the forces used," Momo replied with a bit of a chuckle. Her own kidou was easier explained to most as 'magic' than anything else.

She finished with her hair, but left it down so it could air-dry and pulled it over one shoulder. "And it really does seem like it. In the institute proper, it could be the result of an odorless gas, but that does not explain those that were outside at the time, in fresh air, that once again return to their beds within." She tilted her head in thought, pulling something from the depths of her memories.

"And then there was the riot, where only those actively involved all suddenly passed out while the rest that were only observers remained unaffected." Momo thought it was an advanced kidou. That would certainly explain it.

"Yes, I'm very aware of that," Erika frowned, realizing she may have given Momo the wrong impression of herself. And that had to be corrected immediately. "Don't get the wrong idea, Momo-san, I do not believe in things like 'magic'. Everything has an explanation behind it."

Thankfully, Momo moved on to much more interesting topics. Another clue, for example, that people outside still passed out. That piqued the detective's interest, as she added that to the list of things for her to test in this place. Tonight, she would have something to do, at the very least. Erika was about to inquire more to see if Momo had personally experienced passing out when outside when...

Ah, the very subject that she wanted to speak with Momo about. Not that she knew about this riot until Momo mentioned it, but Erika wanted to know the "timeline" of events that occurred here in Landels. It was clear that the game had been running for quite some time now and Erika had no idea what went on in the past. That put her at a great disadvantage, and was something she had to fix as soon as possible. Now was a good time to do so.

"A riot, you say? Tell me more about this, if you would? I'd like to know when it happened as well, if you have any date for it." It was very clear that Erika was interested, her eyes sparkling and her entire body shifted towards Momo.

Momo had enough grace to not giggle at Erika's comment of not believing in magic. That would eventually change, in her opinion, but this allowed Momo the insight to know beforehand that Erika would not believe what Momo was at all. She wondered how the girl would explain the usages of kidou should she ever see them.

Tilting her head a little, out of mere curiosity, Momo carefully brought Erika's spirit threads into focus. The slight change in the shinigami's eyes, the glistening, was easily passed off as a reflection of the light coming from above, so Momo wasn't worried about the girl suddenly flipping out on her. Yes, she had once told Signum that she'd never do what she was now without prior permission, but Erika would do nothing but laugh at Momo's question. This was best and, though definitely human, there was an odd property to the detective's threads. Almost as if she was supposed to be linked to another...

Letting them fall out of focus, Momo closed her eyes against the headache she had now and checked to see if her nose had started to bleed. It had, but barely, enough that it was barely noticeable, the shinigami bringing her sleeve up to her nose as if wiping away mucus and not the dab of blood.

"I am not sure about the exact dates, Furudo-san," Momo replied, "as I do not have my journal any longer. I have been here for about a month and a lot has happened in that time." People she cared about dying, as an example. "And I was rather broken for about a week amidst it all. I will do my best to recount what I can. Do you want me to start with the riot?"
